poachedegg Posted March 13, 2010 Share Posted March 13, 2010 Can't believe it! We've only had our cavalier for 10 days, and on Tuesday she was spayed and vet said she was a fit healthy dog. Yesterday she went back to the vets for a post op check and everything was fine, apart from that she had had some diarohea in the night. Then last night she started vomiting, dioarohea and then blood in it - everywhere, so we rang the emgergency number and we had to take her to a different vet (out of hours) who have kept her in and put on IV as she was in danger of dehydrating. Have rang for an update this morning and she has calmed down a little, however as there is still diarohea and some concern, so will keep her in again today. I feel really bad, that 10 days ago we took this lovely. lively fit dog from a loving owner and we've come to this in such a short space of time. Yes, she's up to date with her vaccinations - the vets rang this morning to say we could collect her, however rang back a little later to say she had had another episode, so wanted to keep her in. Oh that is good, I was worried about Parvo virus. It is a shame that she can't go home yet but it is best that they keep a close eye on her. The last thing you want is a middle of the night panic. Parsley Posted March 14, 2010 Share Posted March 14, 2010 Sorry to hear of your news, I have gone through the same with my Cavalier, Parsley. He was a very picky eater up until getting him neutered at just over two years old and his appetite became proper dog We were still very careful of what we fed him though as the breed is prone to heart problems (amongst other things). Then, out of the blue, we had the same as you, severe vomiting with blood. We rushed him to the vet who kept him all day but did not have adequate overnight cover so we had to take him to an animal hospital - never forget the half hour journey with him on my lap in the back seat of the car and me holding up a saline drip He was kept in for a few days and made a complete recovery. However, we are extremely careful what he eats as he cannot seem to cope with any level of fat (it was a quarter of a sausage that triggered the attack). He is fed on Royal Canin Sensible and we are very strct on treats much to his disgust. We have never had another episode although he did go permenantly deaf completely out of the blue last year and he is only six but that is another story Cavaliers are a lovely breed, not a bad bone in their bodies. They are also very very sensitive little soles and get very unsettled by any change so little Milly is having quite a tough time of it. I'm sure you will love her back to health and please get in touch if you want any more info. earthmam1 Posted March 15, 2010 Share Posted March 15, 2010 We had daisy speyed a couple of weeks ago and she developed a high temp some 3 days after. Various visits to vet, overnight stays, i.v. antibiotics, and another op to remove an abcess (from nowhere near the spey site) she is fine . We are at present £1,200 lighter . poachedegg Posted March 15, 2010 Author Share Posted March 15, 2010 Well she's home, however that is only because the vets said we had to take her as they are only an out of hours facility and are a separate business to our vets, so they rang last night and asked us to collect her at 7.45 this am. She still isn't right though the incidences of diaroahea are getting less - the emergency vets suggested we take her to our own vets, but as we've only had her 10 days, they don't have any history on her, so we asked if we could bring her home and look after her here where is cosy and a more pleasant atmosphere and they said it shouldn't be a problem as our usual vet would probably give her the same meds. Hope we have done the right thing bringing her home as it didn't make sense taking her from one strange place to the next, just for her to rest and be monitored, though obviously if she gets worse we would take her back. She's all snug in her bed now looking sad and we are to try her with some gastroenteritis special food , little and often and see how we go from there. Have you been given anything like Lectade for her to drink to keep her hydrated? If she wants to eat give her tiny amounts 'little and often'. Good Luck and keep us posted.
