3girls3mogs
Hi there, wonder if I could ask some advise I am new to hen loving. Collected 3 exbats Peggy, Jabber & Paxo 1 month ago all are settling into retirement very well apart form 1 little issue; at 6.30 this morning and on 3 other occasions 1 of the girls is laying while the eglu door is still closed and she creats a terrible noise very loud cluking that I'm sure all the neighbours will hear. I think it's the girl thats laying. I've been racing out to open them up and check all is well, to find a warm egg & they all seem fine. Is this normal behaviour she does sound distressed? But on other mornings there is an egg and no noise? Peggy Paxo & Jabber
Stevie
They sometimes make that particular sound when frightened, but more often than not-its purely to get your attention cos they want to be let out.Either get up a bit earlier and let them out or throw a heavy sheet over the Eglu to make it darker inside (they then think its still nightime). C&T
Hi, and welcome! Some chickens are just noisy.... They like to announce to the world! You may find it is not the chook that is laying, but one that is spectating and wishing to tell the world about her clever friend! I wouldn't rush to open the door each time - they will learn that making noise = getting out. Then you really will be in for a noisy time! I agree, chickens learn very quickly how to get their own way. Show them who is the boss from the outset!

chickyhazel
Our chickens make that noise when they either want out or have run out of food! If they are making it in the mornings they want out, so let them out. In the summer you can leave the eglu door open all night anyway. The chickens like that ana it stops the noise. Wish it stopped mine! We have to shut them up in the summer, as otherwise they make all sorts of racket in the early hours... Def not neighbour friendly! But keep them locked up and they are (on the whole) fine. Let them out the same time each morning, and they are fine.
chickyhazel
Ours sometimes make that at 9 or 10 when they want out of the run, but we are always up and ready by then. I suppose we are lucky maybe your chickens are bored?
Lavenders_Blue
The only time mine have a shout is when they are really spooked or when they are laying an egg. But they don't always do it, some eggs seem to require more shouting than others!
chickyhazel
Haha maybe those eggs are bigger.
