Blue-DiamondChick07
I got her form Upsons Farm in Chelmsford. Some lovely looking Hens there. I'm gonna call her Cinders (Cinderella) as shes currently gettting harrassed by my 3 other girls this is my new problem - the others aren't taking to her too well. The man at the farm advised me to put her in the coop at night so they all wake up together and it should be fine..... Doesn't look like it, and my other coop doesn't arrive till Monday
Cooks
do you have some separate accomodation you can put her in (dog crate???) anything like this? I have never attempted the intro'ing chickens at night method as I have read horrible stories of it going wrong. Introducing 1 girl also is not a good idea really as she will be a target IMO from the older girls, do you have space to get her a friend and keep them separate and do gradual intros? keeping them in separate living accommodation with supervised free ranging, armed with a water pistol to squirt offenders? please see this thread for information of introductions viewtopic.php?f=42&t=25886

Blue-DiamondChick07
I don't think I have anything. I do have a large seperate run, but no housing, as I say, thats due Monday. I'm a bit worried now as new Hen looks stressed I didn't think it would be that easy. Could I put her in the shed at night? racking my brains now. My plan is to get 2 more Hens and put them in the new coop and leave my current girls in the original house.
Cooks
for housing do you have cat travel box?? can you borrow anything??? thats what I used in part of a sectioned off part of my run until my hubby built a little wooden house. But my run does have a roof and is totally secure. I would seperate her asap if it were me. Is the shed secure?? ie can anything get in? as if you have nothing else I would be tempted to say put her in there with a friend at night to sleep, leaving her on her own will be lonely. then let them freerange in your run during the day as long as the other girls are seperate. the slow intro's will work so much better
Leicester_H
for housing do you have cat travel box?? Thats what I did - see http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=51736&hilit=+lily (but they slept on TOP of the box, rather than in it!!) Blue-DiamondChick07
I do have a cat travel box. I could use that at night. Ive taken her out and put her in the seperate run with food etc. Shall I keep the cat box in that? Or try and put it in the main house run? Only, not sure it'll fit, its one of those cottage hen houses with run oh and my other 3 hens freerange in my garden and can see the newbie, and go up to her, but not get at her... Cooks
I dont know what your seperate run is like, but if it is secure and has rain proof roof she will be fine in the cat box at night with some bedding in it until your new housing arrives, but think about getting her a friend, you said you was going to add more anyway, and she will be lonely on her own. If you get her a friend they will bond and will make the intro's to the older girls much much easier. Please let us know how it goes, I am pleased you;ve seperated her. Leicester_H
I would put box in separate run at first. Let them get to know each other for a while - let them free range together (under supervision) - so they can avoid each other. There are lots of messages on here about introducing a new hen to existing flock - lots of good ideas. I suggest you do a quick search. It has a roof which is weather proof and is secure as I'm always paranoid about foxes when should I get her a friend? Baring in mind I only have cat box not sure I can get to the farm for a good week or so
Cooks
well if it were me, I would go and get her a friend asap, they will snuggle together in the cat box to sleep, its only to sleep until the new housing comes. is there anywhere else closer you can get a girl from? Although if she can see the other girls whilst free ranging its not as bad as being on her own totally, but pairing her with another hen would help you greatly IMO. Blue-DiamondChick07
I could get to my farm today if I smile sweetly at my fella It would be such a shame having to get another one

Chook n Boo Mum
I agree with Cookie, so we can share the blame If you get her a friend from the same farm, with a small portion of luck they will know each other & won't have so much of an intro situation I'd get smiling & making cups of tea/coffee and homemade cake & his favourite supper arranged...how could he resist Just as an aside, have you checked freecycle to see if anyone has a suitable house/ dog crate/tea chest which would tide you over until Monday if the cat carrier is a little on the small side for two hens? Blue-DiamondChick07
Do I shut the cat box? May seem a silly Q, but worried its a bit restricted? Shes still alone they have all been mingling through the wire today, so fingers crossed it won't be long.
Cooks
I didn't close the cat box when mine slept in it
Blue-DiamondChick07
Well, my girls have been free ranging all day today together with minimal pecking/squabbling. Is the new girl now accepted? The original 3 don't seem that bothered at all now - just the odd peck as I say...
