ClaudetteDay
is sand ok? just cheap stuff from argos? what would you suggest is the best?
Redwing
I use compost and wood ash in my chooks dustbaths - they have old tyres as dustbaths you can use sand bt maybe mix it with a little soil to make it a little 'lighter' - most sand is ok, kiln dried would be ace - beware builders sand if you have white chooks

Laura & CTB
I use the playsand from argos in the run dustbath mixed with a little red mite powder. The girls also dug their own dustbath in the garden which I top up with soil, sand and ash from the chimnea.
Blue-DiamondChick07
Mine eat the playsand
Space Chick
I get bird sand from my local independant pet suppliers, and mix with compost and diatom. They do empty it all over the run at an alarming rate though I go through a 25kg sack of sand every 3 weeks, good job its only £6 (Should point out that there are 5 dustbaths in my run though )
Derwenna
What does the wood ash do? I was planning to use sand and diatomaceous (not sure I've spelt that right) earth in a cat litter tray. I like the idea of a car tyre but I think Black would try to eat it!
chick wiggle
I use tyres too, free from the tip I put half sand half soil and some Diatom.
ali-s
In the shallow tubtrug in the WIR there is a mixture of play sand and wood ash with a sprinkle of louse powder. The Chickens have several soil dustbaths they have made themselves in the garden.
chickyhazel
We have an old tyre from our car as a dustbath in the eglu which just has sand in from the sandpit. We did have a dustbath in the cube in a pink basket type thing but the chickens didn't seem to use it so we removed it.
LimeChicken57
I find that dry soil is quite good. I put it in a bucket and my just jumps right in
Christian
What does the wood ash do? I use wood ash and compost. Plus a generous sprinkle of Red mite powder - nice smell! Wood ash is believed to have natural anti mite/lice properties. I have been using it for a few years. My hens follow me to the dust bath with the ash bin and squabble over who is first in
Unit
Great topic! Good advice here - I was wondering about the sand... What type to use in particular! Should be able to get some this week now... Cheers!
