MaxBaz
Been a bad day - just recovered from losing Edwina on 31st March (she was two and a half and had been ill for a while), cheered ourselves up by buying another three girls - all about 17-18 weeks old on Good Friday and sadly had to have Bossy Bessie put down this morning as she had a terrible prolapse when I found her this morning huddled up in the nesting box. She had laid her first (tiny) egg yesterday and I was a bit concerned because there was blood on it, but everything seemed to "pop" itself back into place and she was eating and her normal self when I put them to bed last night. This morning, it was obvious the prolapse was not going to stay in - feel more sorry for the fact that she was such a youngster and still had such a lot of life to go. Found it more upsetting losing her oddly than Edwina who had a cracking two and a half years of dustbathing and scratching in the garden. chicken bark
That's terrible. Small comfort that you could have done nothing about it.

MaxBaz
Without wishing to sound "hard hearted" - surely in principal the place I got her from should consider refunding me the money - this isn't about money though more principal. I presume that a replacement girl is out of the question as the pecking order has been set over the last 12 days - but I would have thought as a gesture of goodwill a refund should have been offered. In all we spent over £350 for a new Eglu and the four girls and whilst it is a tiny amount, the money for her and the sad visit to the vets cost me nearly £50.00 Thoughts? Cinnamon
Well, I would give them a ring & let them know, but a prolapse is 'one of those things' that just happen - it wasn't as if she had a disease or something, which would have been their fault. Rather like buying a cat & it getting run over Its always worth phoning them though,to see what they say.I suspect they will off you a replacement anyhow. Can you squeeze another one in as well, to make the intros smoother?
Sarahsausage
Aah so sorry for your loss, poor little hen I'd give the place you got them from a ring and ask for a 'replacement', 12 days isn't that long to introduce another hen, they're bound to squabble at first but will soon settle. Good luck and let us know what happens.
cathybc
sorry to hear about Bessie - but I too think that it was just bad luck rather than you being supplied with a 'dud' so would doubt a refund would be appropriate x
MaxBaz
Latest update - the poultry farm said as a gesture of goodwill they would refund me Bessie's cost. That is all I had hoped for - as a replacement would have had a really tricky time and I don't have room for two extra. The "newbies" and "girls" meet tomorrow - I will be ready with my waterpistol.
