jlo
DD has a German Exhange partner over at the moment so, along with another friend and her German partner we went into London today. The girls were all really keen on shopping so we made for Westfield at Shepherd's Bush. It was pretty busy as we stumbled across the world premiere of Prine of Persia Anyway - the reason I am on a bit of a rant is that we went into Hollister which is apparently THE place to be. For a start, we had to queue to get in - I have never before queued to get into a shop. I thought that we had found a night club by mistake - an impression heightened by the two chaps on the door (wearing not very much and with rather nice bodies so that was ok!) The shop itself is the most badly designed shop that I have ever been into. Shelves were positioned close to the till so that you couldn't look at the merchandise; there were four cubicles so the queue for those took an absolute age and it was so blinking dark that you could hardly see what you were looking at. I also tripped over a couple of well positioned shelves and cracked my shin on them. Clearly I am turning into a fully fledged G.O.W!! Lizzie50
There is a facebook group called 'Welcome to Hollister, do you need a torch' which I found very amusing since I often find myself groping my way around the store trying to find my youngest daughter. I have also been found collapsed on sofa next to tills overcome by the aroma of perfume!
Chucky Mama
It is the most ridiculous shop isn't it I went in with DD and she thought the same which was very reassuring.
Seagazer
I hate this shop. Went in there once with ES, he bought a top and when we got outside he was actually surprised at the colour of it - how can that be right?? It was a blue top with what he thought was red writing on it but its actually pink. Luckily he still liked it I never want to queue to go inside a shop either. We went to the one in Bluewater and I actually don't like the poor boys standing outside in shorts and bare chests, I know you see it all on the beach etc etc but what would you feel like if there were girls standing in bikinis outside. It just seems all wrong to me. I'm probably getting too old now too.
Egluntyne
Never heard of Hollister.
sadietoo
Mmmmm Hollister are part of Abercrombie and Fitch I believe... When my DD and I went to New York it was top on her places to go...at every floor you are greeted by semi clad girls and boys asking if there is anything you would like to make your shopping experience better...My DD said I couldn't tell them more light and less disco Subsequently have visited Abercrombie and Fitch in London (off Regent Street) with DD...we weren't sure where it was but having already visited the NY store, I did remark that I knew we were getting close when we could smell it! Same deal...I can only cope with about 15 minutes and elected to go back to the nice tea shop we had passed on the way and wait for her... felt about
patsylabrador
We treated ourselves to Vue 'scene' tickets. It has a balcony which looks over this shop in Westfields. We spent a surprisingly interesting half an hour watching people queuing for this shop and noticed that most shoppers came out with a quite large bag containing nothing it seemed but bearing the shop's logo. "Ooops, word censored!"ody looked particularly happy with the experience, in fact quite the opposite.
Busybird
My sister lives in a capital city and has a very up to the minute daughter - 13 years old, long blonde hair, perfect make up, genuine uggs, skinny jeans, red carpet walk, attitude They are generous with their gifts and have sent DD Abercrombie and Fitch clothes from the NY store in the past. This year DD was sent a Hollister jacket. We were told that this is THE thing to wear but "Ooops, word censored!"ody around here has heard of them Now, what is the point of having such an item of clothing if it is not appreciated by even the cool kids in the class What DD would really have appreciated is a new pair of jodhpurs... jlo
I knew that you lot would make me feel better!! It's good to know that I am not alone. We went to the one in Bluewater and I actually don't like the poor boys standing outside in shorts and bare chests, I know you see it all on the beach etc etc but what would you feel like if there were girls standing in bikinis outside. It just seems all wrong to me. I'm probably getting too old now too. I agree with you Ann. It is wrong. My comment about their presence was quite flippant but I know exactly where you are coming from!
Seagazer
I'm glad its not just me then, phew. I have heard that they only take beautiful young people on in the store to work. A friend's daughter was going to apply but the friend didn't want her to in case she didn't get accepted and then worried that she wasn't good looking enough! So wrong. welovemarmite
I think there is one in Milton Keynes. I have never been in and am never likely to. From the outside you cant tell what it sells. You have the half naked men on the door who look like bouncers and I find really intimidating.... No matter how muscly their chest, dont want to have to walk that close to them to go into a shop that i dont know what it sells... and yes it looks like you need a torch... AJuff
My daughter will only wear Hollister and A&F. Fortunately she has the sense to research what she wants on the internet to check out colours (can't do this in the shop as it's too dark!). She then she emails her Aunt who is in new York every other week and places her order. Even after postage costs her clothes are way way cheaper from the USA than if she bought them here!!! We all win!!!
chick wiggle
So glad to see this post! Phew, its not just me then. I cant stand the shop but DD HAS to go in and has a few items from there. It makes me feel even older because even with my glasses on i still cant see the stuff properly and as for trying to read the price tickets - well - forget it! Egluntyne, theres a Holister in Meadowhall, not that you can tell its a shop from the outside!
WarrensWorld
From a G.O.M. it's all fear and consumption. No chance of going green here then......
Egluntyne
Egluntyne, theres a Holister in Meadowhall, not that you can tell its a shop from the outside! Is there? Shows how much attention I pay. Can't get out of the place fast enough. It is known locally as Meadowhell.
Olly
Afraid I've never heard of Hollister ... in fact, why have I used that word? After reading the above, I think I'm GLAD I've never heard of Hollister, and don't think I want to go there! Abercrombie and Fitch ... that would be the same Abercrombie & Fitch that told a disabled woman that she had to work in the back room out of sight of the customers, then? She took them to an industrial tribunal and won her case.
Woodcat
i had my first trip into Hollister in bluewater the other day. My boyfriend dragged a very reluctant me in. I hated it it's dark smells and is designed like a bloomin maze the corridors between clothes aren't wide enough to pass anyone and how you find anything you want is beyond me. Something about the lack of light and the smell made me feel horridly dizzy. I nearly passed out at some of the prices as well. Perhaps its dark so you can't see the prices till you go to the till. I think i'm turning into a grumpy old woman at twenty i'm not looking forward to meeting myself when i'm alot older lol.
welovemarmite
just thought, how does this shop rate on access for those in a wheelchair and those with partial sight???
Alis girls
I went into the one in Brent X and walked straight out again - it spelt like a house of ill repute and the lighting was soo poor I was going to ask for a torch.
Seagazer
just thought, how does this shop rate on access for those in a wheelchair and those with partial sight??? That's an interesting point actually. I wonder if this is why they stop too many people going in as its potentially dangerous, people bumping into shelves etc as its so dark and crowded. As I said I've only been in once but would think it would be quite difficult to get a wheelchair around although surely the shop planners would have thought of that? The Dogmother
I've never seen one, but methinks that they love having the queues outside - it lends a certain cachet to the place.
