thenewchick
Just a quick question - Where to I puff this powder? The lady that I got the hens from said round the vent area. Is this the only place I puff or do I puff anywhere else?
The Dogmother
Around the vent (against the skin) and under the wings is best. You'll need to dust the house after you've cleaned it as well. Take care not to breathe it though.

MummyHen
Sorry to hijack this - but I have difficulty in 'dusting' the powder is so fine it just flies everywhere - mainly on me and not the intended target Any suggesions on how to apply to hens - I've been adding a sprinkling to the dust bath and nesting box
The Dogmother
That's one of the reasons why I don't powder my hens! Trying to get it on 12 little squirmers was no joke. See this thread for other options/ideas
Ain't Nobody Here
I hardly ever do it, I must admit, but when I did I used a big soft paintbrush (decorating rather than artist's!). Put some DE in a dish/pot, dip the brush in and brush it under wings/round vents. Seemed to work OK for me .
The Dogmother
I used to use a washing up liquid bottle to squirt it in amongst the feathers.
littlehenny
I add mine to the straw I use in the nesting box and in the litter tray in my eglu. Just chuck a cupful into a bucket of straw and mix through, it seems to work fine
Mollie333
You dont HAVE to powder the birds do you? i just put it in the corners of the coop, and all mixed in with the sawdust. (theycant have straw- they eat it )
Egluntyne
You dont HAVE to powder the birds do you? It is a wise precaution at this time of year, when red mite are at their worst.
foreveryoung
should it be ok if I put it in their dust bath????? (the powder) would it still work just as well??? or should i directly put in on the girls??
Sheilaz
To dust or not to dust? I guess we all do different things; Personally, I favour being rigorous about preventative measures, and constant checking, in the housing. Then, I don't dust the birds. NB.It's important for them & us not to breathe in DE.
