craftyhunnypie
Just a reminder guys & girls to be prepared for red mite, now the weather is hot! Hubby has just stripped his shed & hot air gunned cracks - then yacht varnished , poultry shielded & mite powdered everywhere! The eglus & cubes are due to be stripped tomorrow for their regular clean & they too will be poultry shielded & powdered - plus the birds will all have a powder too. Best to tackle the situation before it starts! Emma.x
theherd123
Very true. Regular clean outs and red mite powder dusting will happen in the hen hotel this summer season too

Faye&Ant
Thanks for the reminder, I did do my thorough clean out last weekend and powder puffed the girls so lets hope they are all ok for the time being.....
Loon
I'm a newbie so I'm not quite sure how the whole 'mite prevention' works. I bought some red mite powder and some louse powder today but it's not very clear on the tub as to whether I put it on the chickens or in the house. Also, it's not clear as to whether you should dust it around as a preventative or if it's just a cure! Too many things to take in at the mo. My poor brain is fried! Horses are soooo much easier
docsquid
I've squirted everything with red mite powder including the girls' chosen dust bath - which meant that they instantly switched to auxilliary dust bath number 2 thus avoiding the powder. Big clean out due after weekend. I'm being vigilant just in case.
brambles
I've also put louse powder in their favourite dust bath. They stared at it and moved on to doing perching. I got some fly repelling spray that's suitable for equine and avian use and gave a bit of a squirt in the cube whilst they were out ignoring their posh dust baths. I've noticed a reduction in flies in there since I started with it a week ago. Do I need to louse powder the girls too? On top of that, should I use red mite powder? ARgh! Eglu to be stripped down this weekend, as I've got two hen partie on Sunday, so will have plenty of opportunity for demonstrating cleaning! Ain't Nobody Here
After seeing your reminder I washed all the perches/surfaces down then Poultry Shielded and Diatomed. Thanks!
chicken bark
I gave the houses a good disinfect today. TBH I have never powdered the birds directly but I always have a generous amount of diatom in their nesting box and some sprinkled around the house. Hopefully that will be sufficient. I have read that you can put vaseline around the end of perches and things and that should help show up if you have red mite or not.
