***with pics*** First free range together

Recommended Posts

I got my new girls early on Sunday from the same place as I had got my original girls a couple of months ago.

This meant that I sort of accidentally bypassed the isolation stage (actually only read the introductions info thoroughly after I had already got the new girls - this was partly because I got the new girls on a bit of a whim  ). So the original hens have been able to FR around the new girls in their Eglu from day 1.

I have done the 'treats next to the new girls run' bit so that the original girls know there is plenty of treats to go around.

That meant today I actually let them FR together with me armed with a water pistol. It went surprisingly well (but will not relax just yet). The problem I found was that Ruby decided to go into the big girls run and then couldn't remember how to get out. The pop hole was too small for me to get to her and even when the rest of the girls had a wander in the run she still didn't know how to get out.

It took a lot of corn, stick, stern words, 'help' from my one year old daughter and luck for her to eventually find her way out. Poor love was getting really worried by it all. Fortunately the big hens didn't give two hoots (or clucks). I guess she will not be going for Top Hen position after all.

The new girls are all safe back in their eglu run for the day. I don't think I can take anymore excitement. :)

Lily the LS acts as though she has known them all for ever. 8) Now she IS a Top Hen contender.

Thank you for the 'introductions' thread - I may not be following it to the letter but it is invaluable. :D

Is it me or does Sunday look as though she has a really big foot in this one?

Thank you all for your lovely comments. :D

It is nice for it to be referred to as garden. It is really a dandelion filled field full of rabbit holes! Ideal for chickens though so I am really lucky.

I've left them to it free ranging together from about 3.30 today. Fingers crossed if they make it to bedtime with no s"Ooops, word censored!"ping then I will let them FR together all day tomorrow. I think it does help that they have enough space to keep out of each others way.
