Ain't Nobody Here
Following on from my "going to uni" thread (which has proved really useful ), I'm now looking for a laptop for ES's birthday (and for him to take uni). Thinking of Dell as we've had them before and liked them. Any recommendations or advice about the kind of laptop a student might want/need? He'll probably want to play online games on it (although I hope not!).
Chucky Mama
We have 3 Acer laptops in the house. 2 have had issues with the mouse pads and 'clicky' buttons next to the mouse pad. 1 was sent away to be repaired but came back the same and 1 has had to have a new hard drive. We weren't that impressed so the latest one that we bought was a Dell which we thought was much more impressive..however it has just had a new motherboard fitted -only 8 months old I would buy another Dell but not an Acer. I have a dinky little Samsung N110 netbook which is great for popping in a bag and taking around. No CD drive though so you have to have an external CD drive available or similar provision to install new hardwear at times.
Lewis
I have a Compaq presario F700 which is what I'll be taking Nearly 2 years old and never had a problem until a couple of weeks ago. It came with insurance so sent off and they sorted it all out for 'free' Mother has a Samsung N110 too, which is great, but not ideal for typing up work etc cos it only has a small screen and keyboard, but would be good for taking to the library and lectures. Battery will be important for Uni if he can't plug it in, some only have a short charge. Whens his birthday? Look out for deals - you can get a student discount and then some if you're going to Uni, some places are doing free ipods, external hdd or software etc
Chunkin
It is my son's birthday today and I gave him this laptop to take to uni in September... http://www.ebuyer.com/product/191785 It was recommended by a friend who works in computers as a fast, light machine that would do everything that would be required over the next few years (he also recommended a really good laptop case as a must!). ES seems pretty pleased with it today!
Geoid
Avoid Acer, they used to be good, but now they are rubbish. Don't get a netbook, keyboard and screen is too small for typing up essays etc. this one is the updated version of the one Chunkin got (cheaper too!). Toshiba is a good reliable brand. Or a macbook, expensive, but will last ages. For good laptop cases try Tech Air Edited May 29, 2010 by Guest
Cinnamon
We too have been through Acers and were less than impressed . We now have Dell Inspirons for the girls and they have been Fab.

WarrensWorld
Eileen as a DELL inspiron 1525, never had any problems. I even get to use it in the garden, when I'm away from my DELL desk top. I've never had a problem with that either....
Christian
I bought a little Mac ibook four years ago and still going strong. Macs take a bit of time to used to, but after a while it clicks and i would never go 'back' With the latest ones, the Microsoft stuff is loaded into it, so you shouldn't have any problems with files etc. Worth the additional cost imho, as it will last for years. I would recommend them, wouldn't go for a acer though like other people have said, we've had a couple and they aren't that great!!
