What is best to put down on the floor in the run?

Recommended Posts

I've just cleaned my girls out - s"Ooops, word censored!"ed out all the old bark which we had put inside the run. The only problem with the bark is it keeps being kicked out through the wire of the run and onto the lawn. Despite racking the lawn loads to try and clear away the bark I've still managed to break 2 lawn mowers because of it! Therefore I'd like to use something else but haven't a clue what. Any suggestions? I am going to put a low barrier around my run so that nothing can get through onto the lawn (unless kicked up high!).

I'd seen the skirt around the run you can get for chicks but that comes as part of a whole chick-set... I was thinking of fashioning something similar perhaps? Any suggestions from others who may have done so?

I have a right hotch-potch of kick board. It ranges from defunct fence paneling to left over vinyl flooring via old skirting boards. Pre WIR I used a roll of that corregated plasticy garden border which I held in place by making holes with a hold punch and using small cable ties. I have used old railway sleepers or fence posts outside the wire and they have acted as a barrier to preditors.

If you have a garage or a shed I bet you will find lots of possibilities lurking within - I am forever looking at the junk in mine with an eye to how I could make use of it for the girls.

You will still have some flooring flung out with a well aimed kick but some form of kick board really keeps it down and inside the run is better than outside the run.

Thank you for your replies! I've managed to get aubiose this morning - couldn't get Hemcore. I did also see Easibed but thought I'd try that next time.

So what now? We have the Eglu and standard run (which has a large cover on it) inside a walk in run (which has no roof) which I'd guess is about 8ft by 5ft  edited... IT IS 18FT BY 9 FT!!! ... The chooks are not free ranging in the garden at the moment because my little girl is crawling and loves being on the grass so I'm trying to limit the chook poo! Do I put the Aubiose down just in the Eglu run or shall I put it all over including the outer run?

How often do I remove it and change it?

Thank you!

I'd put it in just the Eglu run as that's the bit that's covered - you don't want to get Aubiose wet, as it'll just get soggy and clumpy :?

In my walk in run, I put it down a couple of inches thick and then change every 6 weeks or so (and wash everything down with a disinfectant called Virkon S but other people use other products). I poo pick daily so top up with a few handfuls at about week 4. I also use Stalosan F once a week (or whenever necessary) to keep it smelling fresh :)

PS I've used plastic mesh to keep the girls off my lawn and they just free range down the borders now (when it's not chucking it down with rain, that is! :wall: )

When I had an eglu run, I used old rotary clothes drier covers - worked really well!

I used Hemcore or Easibed - both quite fine cut so won't wreck a lawn mower :) .

I've copied this idea and got 4 rotary cover from ebay for £10 including postage :D and I use Easibed.

just realised I put completely the wrong measurement down for the size of the WIR! It is at a guess 18ft by 9ft we think - can't be bothered to try and locate a tape measure - but it is a decent size. I've ordered by covers for the sides. Now looking for more inspiration for things to put in the run for them. I always hang up lettuce/cabbage etc for them to peck at, throw corn around for them to scratch up and they have a litter tray with play sand and soil to dirt bathe in. Might try the tyre idea.

These ideas all look great but one daft question - how do you keep the aubiose/hemcore dry in the eglu run? is it simply a matter of taking covers on and off?

Am fed up with the garden looking like the Somme so am planning to make a permanent site for my girls.
