ross81
I am working away from home and woke up this morning to a call from the OH with some sad news. I hatched 14 quail at the weekend and another 8 had hatched early Monday morning. The OH got home from work about 10.30pm last night and she put the 8 in the brooder beside the others and called me to say they were all fine and eating, drinking and running about which was great. The call this morning however was to tell me she woke up at 6am went and checked the chicks before heading to work and they were all dead, drowned she said the water tup which is a litre gravity type was still standing and all the marbles were still in the bottom so had not been spilt . I use and have always used the blue disposable cloths in the bottom of my brooders and it looks like somehow the chicks have managed to get the corner of the cloth into the water, and when i say corner the OH said that there was just the tip of the cloth in the water. which has absorbed the water and acted like a syphon (sp?) and emptied the water into the brooder causing the chicks to drown . I'm so mad and angry with myself for using these cloths but i have always done so for the first week when chicks hatch and never had problems. Need to find a new solution for the brooder floor!!! I know others use these cloths on the brooder for5 the first few days so please be aware. Sorry for the long post just mad.
