Minnie&Moose
Watched my son come in joint 3rd today in the 60m sprint at his Sports Day - very poignant moment because when he was born he had a neonatal stroke that caused significant amounts of damage to his motor cortex. His doctors prepared us for the fact that we might have a very significantly physically handicapped child, perhaps unable to even support his own head in adulthood. Instead, and I still can't believe how incredibly lucky we are, he's turning out to be a keen and skilled tennis player, and quite a nippy runner! Minnie&Moose
Thanks for your lovely comments. Our son has just had his 10th birthday so it's quite an emotional time for me - this time 10 years ago we didn't even know whether he'd live or not, never mind what kinds of problems he might experience! That period is still so vivid - my partner and I camping out in my hospital room visiting the Special Care Unit at all times of the day and night, not able to hold him but spending our time talking to him, stroking him, making the most of every minute we had together. The staff were so amazing, we would not have coped anywhere near as well without the compassion and support we got from all the midwives and the paediatrics special care unit who looked after us all. So yes, today is certainly very special
