thelurch
Managed to obtain about a dozen corn on the cobs which had gone past their best today, still firm but not so good for human consumption so I thought would be ideal for the hens. How do you give this treat? Is it better raw, cooked or even allowed to dry out? I also thought about freezing them, unless I go down the drying route. I would plan to hang the cob whole from string which I use for hanging greens etc. Any opinions welcome
hippy chick
Hi, I just hang mine up raw for the girls to play swing-ball. They really love sweet corn I have planted them a whole vegetable patch full of them this year.
mafia princess
Hi, My chickens have a spiral hanger and I pop the corn on the cob into this. They go wild for it, I would say corn on the cob is their absolute favourite Enjoy watching them strip it down to the inner cob!
thelurch
Thanks for those replies, does anyone have any thoughts on drying a few out or freezing some? as they won't eat all of the cobs before they go off totally
ClaireG
Mine love corn on the cobs, but don't like the dryed ones. I'd freeze what you can.
karena
Mine totally ignore it! Does anyone have any tips for how to get them to show any interest? I've hung it from string in the middle of the run.
foreveryoung
i put a scew in one end and hang them up with string - swing ball is deffinitly something that comes to mind!!!
Falkor
I cable tie them the the run mesh so that they can get a good peck in. When I hung them that bashed them about but rarely got to each much as couldn't get hold of it properly. Probably suffered a few head aches from where they pecked at it and it swung back and smacked them on the head though!
kerryegg
Drop it raw on the floor and stand back. My 4 finish it in minutes. I couldn't risk walking into the run, they can spot it from the patio door. Wish I'd planted some, I am having to buy them at Tesco. will plant some next year.Fortunately they also like marrow, bumper crop this year. majuka
Ours love it. I have always cooked it in the past if I am doing them some at the same time as I am doing us some. Do they prefer it raw then?
Miss Millies Chicken
I buy the frozen ones from Sainsburys/Tesco which work out cheaper than buying fresh. I take one out of the freezer in the morning and by the late afternoon sweetie time it is defrosted.
karena
I cut it up for them tonight and put it in their treat bowl, and they looked really disappointed. When I went back after 30mins they had figured out how to eat it I think. And Millie spotted the whole cob just before bed, so there is progress... dixie chick
I stick a skewer in them and stick them in the ground. The girls then gather around and peck away. They love them and don't stop until they have pecked off all the kernels. I use them raw - I guess I would freeze any surplus and defrost when needed.
