cooker
http://www.flickr.com/photos/54505412@N07/?saved=1 I hope this link works! Help! This is our 21 week old light sussex...sold at 5weeks old to us as a little girl, but we are unsure. She is showing no signs of reaching pol, she doesnt crow, but she is huge! twice the size of our year old light sussex. She raises the feathers around her neck when she gets cross, and is tall and has thick legs. But her comb isnt massive, she doesnt crow, surely she would crow by now?! she does talk, so not mute...I keep changing my mind on whether I should be calling her edith or eddie! stoice
Looks like an Eddie in the making to me. No expert, just going on the upright stance and slight curve to tail feathers. Hackle feathers look quite pronounced too. Good looking chook either way really
Egluntyne
I'd say Eddie too.
Charlottechicken
Eddie. Pointy neck feathers and lovely waterfall effect with those white feathers on the tail. I'm surprised with the face furniture though, would've expected more from a Sussex boy
Chucky Mama
I'd say Eddie too.
cooker
mmm..that looks pretty unanamous..I have to say that pic was taken last week...it looks as if 'she' has had a bit of a growth spurt this week and I am no longer really in any doubt...the only question is when will she crow?? we will need to get rid of 'her' before she does, don't want to upset the neighbours! Will get back onto the breeder this week and see if he can take 'her' back ( can't bring myself to say 'him'!!!) Rachel
Lewis
I'd expect him to be more manly than that at 21 weeks, but going with Eddie too! Can start crowing from any time now on...
the bradley bunch
rachel, what is the green tinted feathered hen in the background? she's got exactly the same colouring as my silkie x poland type chick, and was just wondering what breed your girl is? do you have a full pic of her? thanks
Redwing
I have 4 eight week old Sussex in my care at the moment - I still dont have a clue what sex they are!! It would take a confident person to be able to sell a 5 week old chick as definitely sexed so I would now go to the breeder and ask them to confirm your fears
craftyhunnypie
Sussex can have large combs & quite manly looks. I'm not convinced that's a boy. Emma.x
Jools
A tough call on this one! The head gear doesn't look anywhere near big enough to be a boy, but the feathers do look very male. I'd be interested in the result regardless. My sussex bantams were easily sexed at 4-5 weeks, but maybe I was just lucky. My neighbour (who breeds LF Light Sussex) waits a little longer to be sure. Mollie333
I would of thought bigger comb and wattles..
jennydavies
Our LS "Blanche" was at least 25 weeks before she turned into "Raymond" and it was very sudden. The face furniture was very small up until that point and no crowing. She did start to do funny little dances in front of the other girls and all of a sudden POW ! Raymond emerged now he is sooo handsome, has a huge flock of ladies to look after and has the most gorgeous manly stance and plumage. I think he is an Eddie
cooker
http://www.flickr.com/photos/54505412@N07/?saved=1 I have uploaded a few more pictures of eddie taken yesterday..definately a cockerel! she has gone back to the breeder this evening :*...but we did a swap for two beautiful little brown hens pol The brady bunch...it was the colonel you could see in the background, she is a black rock, I have put a few pics of her on there aswell, they both have beautiful 'petroly' feathers at their tails, the photo of them stting on the fence was taken ages ago...back when edith was about 6weeks old and thhe black rocks were about 10weeks. Poor edith, she couldnt help being a boy! I wonder where she's sleeping this eve... Rachel
jennydavies
We were very fortunate that our neighbour needed a cockerel after losing his four year old one. We see Raymond with his flock of ladies every evening when we walk the dogs. He is very proud and upright and crows to me when I talk to him, he still seems to recognise me so I feel ok about him having to be rehomed. It's a shame Eddie had to go back to the breeder, but I know how you feel, we didn't want a cockerel either. Our next-door neighbours one's have really started to get aggressive with each other now.
