Ain't Nobody Here
Just happened to catch a bit of Channel Five news. They showed a horrible report about the living conditions of the hens in the Happy Egg Co. It's hard to believe that that advert of a hen riding on the back of a quad bike is from the company shown in the news report . The conditions were atrocious . Luvachicken
That field of chickens always looks so lovely and as for the one that gets to ride the bike......just shows you can't trust anyone.
Chucky1
Didn't someone have a "bad" experience a couple of months ago with Happy Hen Its sad news as they were kind of a beacon for welfare standards in a commercial company. As you say its hard to know who to trust
Lavenders_Blue
Just looked this up online - it's shocking, disgraceful and totally unacceptable. It makes me so thankful I have my lovely girls to lay me happy eggs with enough spare to supply a few neighbours with happy eggs too. Rosey Supposey
I sobbed my heart out when I watched the Viva! video. http://www.viva.org.uk/campaigns/chickens/happy-eggs.htm (Please be warned, contains some graphic images of hens in distress.) I remember the British Hen Welfare Trust (back when they were the Battery Hen Welfare Trust) including a shiny endorsement of The Happy Egg Company in one of their newsletters. I'm not vegetarian but I've got to hand it to Viva!, they've done some fantastic work on exposing horrendous farming systems this year. Wish my ex-batt liked hugs, could do with giving her a cuddle right now.
Ain't Nobody Here
How do they use electric wires to control the hens? I think it was something to do with the feed and trying to prevent poo getting in it . They were told to disable it permanently after the inspection, which is something . Heidi-Hi
Wow... Makes me sick, I used to buy Happy Eggs Never ever ever again will I buy eggs from a shop. Mind you, what about the cakes and baking goods and food that is made of eggs, that is no better is it? Sick...
sparkysmum
This is simply terrible, disgusting, barbaric. I have bought these eggs as I'm having an egg drought at the mo. I guess everyone believed blurb. I know I did - what can you do when they are endorsed by the SSPCA . Buying goods endorsed by SSPCA does encourage you to believe that certain standards are met. In reality these poor birds are not much better off than battery hens. I really feel quite ill Where does anyone else buy their eggs from if they have to
Ain't Nobody Here
I'm the same, Alli . When I buy eggs (grudgingly!) I've always bought Happy Eggs on the strength of their advert. More fool me . Glad to see the story is getting more exposure now on Sky News.
grracee
That's disgusting! Just watched the video on Viva! and have to say I had tears in my eyes The advert is so misleading it's unbelieveable. I remember when I first saw that and thought, wow! it looks great and I have brought their eggs before going by what I saw on the advert, never again! Christian
Just who do you believe now?? Luckily, most of us don't have to buy eggs, although mine are all slowing down for winter and I will have to buy some soon. Where do you get 'good' eggs from?? Space Chick
It's absolutely devastating I have cried reading the news articles this morning I'm so glad my girls are happy, just a tragedy that all hens can't have happy lives.

Daphne
This may not help many of you as I know I'm lucky enough to live in a rural area, but I buy my eggs during the autumn/winter from 2 farm shops where I specifically asked to see the hens. One place keeps birds for the table as well as doing her own sausage/bacon etc etc so the smallholder was very pleased to chat about her experiences and the other is local to me and I use them a lot for all sorts. They have many different breeds, ducks, turkeys and bantams and we often have good chicken chats. If I wanted to, I could also buy eggs from a local supplier of hybrids - ie the eggs from the birds for sale. Maybe this is a possibilty for more people? Guest
It is the same story time and time again. And it is getting ridiculous. It is the Freedom foods company responsibility to send out people to survey their farms every couple of months. This is why I tell my family and neighbours to go out and buy eggs from a breeders of meat chickens. They have a happy life. Also to buy eggs from people with hens. beach chick
that is really horrible. although I've not bought their eggs, I too have looked at the Happy Hens and believed the hype - I feel stupid now. luckily I havent bought eggs in years, but if I did I would use the farm shop or farmers market. green
That's so bad! I bought my last eggs (mine aren't laying yet) from a farm shop we happened to stumble across, I'll have to make an effort and see if there's a farm shop somewhere closer to home. It makes me that I've been supporting that!

Mrs Dabooka
This is awful. I use to buy 'Happy Eggs' on the promise the hens were treated well. I'll make sure I let other people know about this. I couldn't bear to watch the footage the description was enough.
Christian
Thanks Daphne, we do have a couple of farm shops near us and I will look into their eggs
