Would you name your child Ikea?

Recommended Posts

Just don't do what we did.

We could not agree on names. I like unusual names whilst my husband only likes traditional ones. The only name we semi agreed on was Atticus (both of us love to kill a mocking bird) but everyone hated it and begged us not to call our son it. We eventually, at birth, agreed on another name which neither of us were convinced by and it took us nearly a year to admit it was the wrong choice and didn't suit our son. So just before he was one we changed his name(not to Atticus) :eh:

I dont mind the change and having to explain but we are left with the fact he has a different name on his birth certificate to his passport now its been done officially.

Ooh Katriona - I like that.

I liked:

Rory or Ruary

Frazer

Forrest

Angus

Douglas

Set my heart on Cameron. His lordship hated the lot - great since he didn't come up with any ideas. Ended up with Ciaran which we both agreed on (which is a pain for the boy but sheer delight for me because MIL couldn't pronounce it at all). Lucky for the boy it's an Irish name and so I couldn't dress him up in a kilt.

For girls:

Kirsty

Victoria

Freya

Fern

He liked Mercedes and Chelsea. I said no cars or football teams. He said no flora or fauna. Damn! Curses, foiled again. So Erin she is.

We also tried to get names that couldn't be shortened. So they've been called Ez and Ciz. Somebody will always find a way.

Being a vicar, I come across all sorts of baby names - one or two of which have had me struggling....There are, quite truly, a couple of little girls called Porsche and Ferrari...Also a lad called Saturn, who is now of school age and has had his name shortened to "Sat". Doesn't feel right, does it?

Then there was a little one called *------------* May - which sounds absolutely innocuous til you learn that her surname was LEEKE.

Sometimes parents are either unkind or completely thoughtless. I wanted Celtic names for mine but OH was against that (would have had Catriona, Rowan and Owain I think...) so in the end we went very traditional - daughter is Lucinda (tho usually Luci or Cinders), elder son Giles and then younger son was named after my father, who was John, always known as Jack. When he was a bump, I knew NO little Jacks at all. He arrived and lo, suddenly EVERY single baby boy in the whole NCT was Jack. There was a mad phase when we thought he was going to do a kind of reverse of his grandfather and be Jack, always known as John, but he doesn't mind it now - though sees it as a bit of a failure of creativity - and amazingly despite the plethora of Jacks about he only once had another in his class, though he currently has 4 friends called Matthew and 2 called Sam (with the same surname). It's really hard to get right, isn't it...

We tried to give our children traditional names, that they could shorten if they wished. We didn't intend to shorten them ourselves, but we call all of them by a shortened version. I call my DS Jim, he is a James and the only doubt that i had when naming him was that I hated the name Jim  His big sis calls him Wames much to his disgust.

My youngest is Katherine and we have always called her Katie, she was worried that when she started secondary school they would all call her Katherine, but it has been ok. I call her titch most of the time even though she is now taller than me. She was a tiny baby and toddler.

My eldest is Rebecca shortened to Becca, but often known as Beaky a nickname from primary school.

So traditional names aren't always the answer.

I know a school friend who I have since lost touch with called her first child Ocean.

I'm a children's nurse so come across lots of strange and wonderful names..... the most curious being 'Fifi' for a boy :? Of course everyone assumed he was a little girl, so I had to keep pointing out he was a boy.

I love how all the old fashioned names are coming back into fashion again, such as Tilly, Molly, Megan and all :)

Can't believe someone would name their child Ikea - wonder if it was for religious reasons?

A friend's sister called her first born George. And then had a girl called Abigail (Abi). My friend was horrified...George 'n' Abbey  A bunch of us seriously thought my best friend was going to call her son Hedgerow Underpants (turns out she wanted to call him Pedro but we were all misheard her....). My OH was taught at Uni by somebody called Jenny Taylor and she was giving a talk locally just a few weeks ago.

I've worked in Education for about 10 years now, and at a PS with an unusual catchment area, some very middle-class streets, and some rather...less so. So along with the Tobias, Martha, Cassandra, India, Felix, etc we've had the Kirklin, Braden, Balon, ( surely made up names?) myriad Josh and Jakes. My other half's name is Jacob and when we are in the super market and we hear " JAKE!!!!" yelled..he jumps. I had a child in my class a few years ago who was named after his father,,,as was his brother. I've changed the names, but they we both called "Dave". Dave Jayke and Dave Jorge - and thats; how they were spelled too.. Iask you....The girls are all called Georgia, Megan, Abbie, Paige.....

When we had the boys me and my OH made a top ten list and the one that came highest in both lists won. Simples. *squeak*

My husband and I could probably write a top 100 list and still find that the same name wasn't in both lists... actually probably top 500 :lol:

Oh, and I meant to say....names are very personal too, and one of those areas where one has to be very careful about passing comment. After 10 years in Education, you cannot help but associate some names with the personality traits of certain children. I love the name Benjamin, but after having a child in my class who I could have cheerfully murdered, ( my arm still has the dent from his frequent rapid poking to gain attention) there is no way I could name my child this lovely name. My fab colleague Natm really struggled to name her 2nd son.....as alll the boys names we came up with had negative connotations....

A colleague told me a story of a couple who had a child called Yendor. Everyone thought it was an ancient Hebrew name, until someone found out where it came from. Turns out they drank at a pub which had the name Rodney in the pub name and it was painted on the windows. From the inside, even though the letters were backwards, it read 'Yendor'. They didn't realise it was Rodney backwards
