The Flu jab Thread.

Recommended Posts

As a pregnant person, I am confused re the mixed messages on this one.

I don't subscribe to the "Flu Vaccine is unsafe" point of view (although respect that point of view - you have to do what you believe is best for your child), but up to now have heard nothing about the flu vaccine at any of my doctors, midwife's etc appointments, I am only hearing things on the news. I know of other pregnant people trying to get the vaccine, and their doctors saying they aren't a priority. So confusing!!

As have a cold at the moment (joy!) don't want to have the vaccine at the same time as that, but will be contacting doctors surgery after Christmas to see what they say...

it is confusing i know, the rationale is this, flu vac is a killed virus so cannot infect you or baby, triggers your immune response & so gives baby antibodies too. Also pregnancy suppresses your immune system so you are more at risk of complications from flu. Unfortunately we never have enough vaccine to jab everyone at risk so most surgeries started with the usual folks asthmatic diabetics frail elderly etc, maybe next year it will be different

We have Imuvac and it says 12/40 and several GP's have said the same - thanks Snowy will check - our GP's dont seem happier doing it andny sooner and the other practice I work at said the same when I had a 9/40 pregnant lady in for it. No wonder public are confused when we are too. Are you givng any time. A colleague a nurse refuses to vaccinate pregnant women.

It's mainly workers that I deal with, I've only had one who 'thought she might be' pregnant, and we gave it. It was Norma Evans from the DOH vaccines quango who confirmed it was OK at any stage, and the green book has only been updated in the last month or so. I can understand the reticence of GPs - it wasn't that long ago that we didn't give any vaccines to pregnant women at any stage. It does appear that the benefits outweigh the risks though - H1N1 seems to be affecting people particularly badly doesn't it :?

I'm not pregnant but I do suffer with mild asthma. Last year after having the flu jab I was extremely ill resulting in paramedics visiting in the middle of the night and several visits to the doctors surgery to be put on a nebulizer and very strong steroids so so far this year I have avoided the flu jab but really don't know what to do as I usually always have the injections. What do you think?

I agree you need to discuss it with your GP. You may have already been exposed to a bug shortly before or after having the vaccine. It is only contra-indicated if you have had a severe allergic reaction to it or any of it's components. Only your GP can confirm that one.

I know Ive posted before but this is getting me so mad now, so many worried people and no vaccines to give them. Ive had really upset parents on the phone for days all wanting their kiddies vaccinated and I cant do it, we are now planning to trot out last years left over stock of swine flu vacc, but healthy under 5s are not eligble, just those with diabetes asthma heart or kidney problems etc. Its driving me mad, the seasonal jab we had was not lisenced for the under 5s so we had nothing to give them back in Oct. We have had one complaint against us already, a really angry dad feels we were refusing to vaccinate his son to save money & wouldnt listen at all. I can understand why people are so angry but its really not my fault :(

Is last year's swine flu vaccine effective against this year's viral strain?

Well this is a useful debate, they have just offered us a free jab at work if enough people take up the offer, I've been dithering but think I might take it. I've never bothered before - and haven't had flu for years - but I live on my own, and being ill, even with something not life-threatening, is very difficult if you have "Ooops, word censored!"ody even to bring you a cup of tea, never mind seeing to hens and cats!

I've got my appointment for the jab next week...

Don't normally, but being pregnant and having to commute to london lots next month on horrid packed airless commuter trains, it seems to make sense...

Just hope all those that really need the jab get it soon!

apparently its the same H1N1 strain as last year, the seasonal combination jab had swine flu, H3N2 and influenza b strains

I work for the out of hours gp service, please try to keep things in perspective. Out of every 50 calls for people who think they have flu - probably 1 does. If you have a compromised immune system then you need a flu jab. Please bear in mind that tamiflu or any flu jab can make you feel really quite ill :( Personally I wouldn't take tamiflu even if I had swine flu.
