Tefal actifry - does it make nice chips?

Recommended Posts

I've seen the Currys advert for a bargain priced tefal actifry but does it make nice chips and can it feed 4?

I usually cook the chips the old fashioned way in a big chip pan but the oil does tend to go a bit mad sometimes and no matter how much kitchen roll i use the chips are still a bit soggy when i've drained them.

Any information would be lovely....it would make a good Christmas pressie :D

I am possibly the biggest Actify fan here and I hardly ever make chips in it! I use it for cooking sausages, chicken pieces, sliced mushrooms, the meat and pepper mix for Fajitas. I also brown meat in it for making casseroles and bolognese- I could go on! Its an automatic saute pan that stirs itself really, couldnt do without it now and yes there are 4 of us chez Rhapsody.

go on-treat yourself!

I find Maris Piper potatoes make great chips.

Me too :D I just peel them, cut into fat chips, put them in an oiled baking tray, spray them lightly with an olive oil spray and pop them in the oven for 1 1/2 or so. No Actifry and scrummy chips.

I do this with mine too and with white potatoes I leave on the skins so they are really wedges - lovely although the oven is on and I try and cook something else while this is on. I cannot justify the actifry meantime and I have no room for it for all the other gadgets from Omlet forum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:( hubby was worried by some reviews that said the actifry can catch fire and only seem to last longer than a year - so he didn't order one after all.

THIS ONE is much better quality and I am told, reliable :)

That fryer says it uses a litre of oil! the Actifry only ever needs a teaspoon, and meat generally needs none at all. I've had mine for 2 years and it has never caught fire or broken down, I bought a new lid a while ago cos the old one got a bit battered but thats it.

Ooh, that sounds interesting, do your chips go crispy and what setting do you put your oven on?

Yes they do go crispy and with Maris piper potatoes they are very much like chip shop chips. I put them in the oven set at about 180 and then sometimes put them up to 200 towards the end. It is not a very accurate process though with me. I will cook them on one of those liners next time I do them though as they sometimes stick to the bottom despite the oil.

ooh that is a lot of oil in comparison. I don't use either so I would go with recommendation from those that use them and I think the whole point of the Actify is the fact that it uses such a small amount of oil. :) I would have thought that they would have been pulled off the market if there was a huge issue with them

Yes it does plus using the recipe book it makes a tasty chilli which we've had many times now.

We've had ours for 18 months and used it at least once a week. The big plus for us is the ease of cleaning. There is just no comparison to the standard deep fat fryer and over the years we've tried them all.

We paid £119 but keeping checking Amazon and Argos as the price can fluctuate daily.

OH's family are Greek Cypriot and he was born above a chip shop. They only ever use Maris Pipers for chips. It's why they are so expensive in supermarkets - because tons and tons go to chip shops up and down the country.
