Kylie1007
Putting the coop up in the rain last night My son in the coop - we could do with a 2nd one for him A bedraggled gold silkie The Buff Orpington (I think!?) Inside their house I can't remember the breed of the front chicken, will remember if I hear it Not great pics as the weather is poxy and I don't want any escapees just yet! Sageandonion
Wow that was quick - the girls look lovely despite the wet look . Let us know how you get on with the orpington, one is on my wish list! Happy Chook watching - it's addictive
Chortle Chook
So pleased to see the arrivals Any names yet? Your Silkie looks just like my gold one (who I call 'Dolly'). They do get bedraggled rather easily and we have frequent sessions with me drying her 'hair' in the kitchen with the hair dryer before she goes to bed. Chortle Chook
Do they mind a hair dryer? My chickens don't mind the hair dryer at all (less than the dogs). OH and I have a bit of a routine going on very wet days. I get one girl at a time out of the house just as she has potters in for bed, bring her into the kitchen, and sit her on my lap while OH dryes her with the dryer on low heat, low puffing. We use a child's hair brush to gently raise the feathers a little and get underneath. It all seems to work just fine. The little chickens sit there quite happily looking about them. I thought they'd get all in a flap but they seem to quite like it. When done I take them back out and put them on their perch.
Kylie1007
I found out that our breed are salmon faverolle (the creamy coloured one), buff orpington (the gingery one) and a gold silkie. I tbought the buff orpington was the faverolle.

megalin
They're beautiful Kylie, congrats! We have a lovely Orp, fab character! Endless entertainment. They look very sweet when they're all bedraggled..... Good luck enjoy them!
Kylie1007
My girls went to bed without any fuss, the silkie and the faverolle went to bed without a problem and I had to give the orpington a little bit of encouragement as she was half in the door and half out. Think that the Faverolle will be named Henrietta and the Orpington Esmerelda...still not sure about the Silkie yet but Silkie as a name suits her! Kylie1007
We have decided to call our chickens... (Buff Orpington) - Esmerelda (hubby's choice!) (Salmon faverolle) - Henrietta (3 yr old son's choice!) (Gold silkie) - Rosie (3 year old choice again - we watched Rosie's Walk on You Tube!) My 3 ladies sleep, one on the perch, one in the laying area and the other one on the tray. Where do yours sleep. It make me laugh as when i get home 5.45pm they have all took themeselves off to bed

I love that they put them selves to bed It is a fairly small coop really, I'm glad that they're free ranging as I wouldn't like to keep them "cooped" up in it during the day but they'll have to be locked up at the weekend when we're away. Hubby says it's OK for the 3 of them as apparently each bird needs one square foot of space? Don't know if that's right.

Kylie1007
Es, my orpington, is so funny! We've got their straw, sawdust, food etc in a big storage box next to their house and the moment I go to it, she's under my feet seeing what food I've got! LizzieLloyd
We've got the same coop for our 5 bantams although we did think it was a bit on the small side when they are in the coop when we're not free ranging. We built an 'extension' to the right of the pen by cutting out the lower mesh and screwing on a low level run we made to the same dimensions as the original coop. Its doubled the floor space they had and has kept them happy when they cant free range. I think the coop is perfectly suitable for the amount of birds you have but its easy to extend if you want. When it comes to nesting though, they all pile on top of each other in the nest boxes - stooopid birds

Sure hubby can knock up a run
Plum
My silly lot pile in the nest box too and I send them back but there is always a few there in the morning. Your girls (and boy) are lovely. Kylie1007
Thank you - my girls are rather lovely but my son...well...that depends on what mood his and today, he's been quite a monster! Actually, he was sent home from school early today because of the EGG on his head (he fell over and bumped his forehead!) I'm waiting for my chickens to lay and he ends up with one on his head!
