Couperwife
Hello all I was listening the the radio this morning (Sarah Kennedy - Radio 2) and one of the things she was talking about was innapropriate song words, or rather songs that are chosen for the wrong reasons. The song that she was talking about was Whitney Hustons "I will always love you" this song is one of the most popular choices for a couples first dance in their wedding, but it was actually written by Dolly Parton when she was leaving someone who she was working with. maybe not a fantastic choice of words "If I should stay - I would only get in your way..." maybe people should stop and listen before making decisions (I know - Im a teacher, but in many cases, it is so true!!) what does anyone else think??? bronze
I find it funny that Angels is one of the most popular songs at weddings and at funerals.
Cate in NZ
I agree that some people fall the mood and tune of a song, and they simply don't actually stop and listen to the lyrics before they choose it for a wedding or whatever. "I Will Always Love You" is definitely an odd wedding first dance choice when you listen to the words. It reminds me of an interview I read by Sting absolutely ages ago, where he said something along the lines of being amazed that so many people loved "Every Breath you Take" as a love song, when in fact it's the rather menacing tale of a stalker Every breath you take and every move you make Every bond you break, every step you take I'll be watchin' you Every single day and every word you say Every game you play, every night you stay I'll be watchin' you I've never enjoyed listening to the song in quite the same way since I read that. But then again weddings are personal things and I guess people just choose songs that have a special meaning to them and their relationship, and maybe don't pay too much attention to the lyrics. We had "White Lace and Promises" for our first dance, but I'm not sure that I ever checked the lyrics, loved it and thought it sounded appropriate. Now I'm wondering if it really was
Couperwife
I heard that the Sting song "every breath you take" was to his wife, I think she wanted a divorce. We had Aerosmiths "dont want to miss a thing" as our first dance (I tell people that it was "love in an elevator" - but it wasnt really)
theherd123
I heard that the Sting song "every breath you take" was to his wife, I think she wanted a divorce. A family member who unfortunately died of cancer wanted this played at his funeral as a message to his children

Guest
We get a lot of this at weddings. Last year a singer sang the gorgeous 'Lascia ch'io pianga' by Handel. Lots of people love this and of course it was sung in Italian. But I knew the translation! Pitiless Armida! With fiendish force you have abducted me from the blessed Heaven, from my happiness. And here, in eternal pain, you hold me alive, tormented in Hell. Oh Lord, have pity, let me weep. Let me weep my cruel fate and let me breathe freedom! Let sorrow break these chains of my sufferings, for pity's sake. Great choice for a wedding!
Couperwife
Another weird one is John Lennon's "imagine" I saw a news article where a load of politicians read out one line of the song, but it was so wrong. I mean, have these people ever read the words of Imagine? its all about everyone being totally equal, so there would be no need for politics - no good shops, no people owning anything, nothing to look towards, nothing to aspire to... sorry, ill shut up now

craftyhunnypie
My husband is also a part time DJ and we have done loads of weddings together. Funny how many times you get asked for Young hearts run free & Band of gold. Both to be played during the night, not as first dances! Both are about splitting up! Charming! Hmmm first dances have been anything from the Carpenters - We've only just begun, Aerosmith ' don't want to miss a thing'. Dido - Thank you. Abba - I have a dream ( which is actually about death)! Angels is the most popular & also Lionel Ritchie ' Hello'. The worst one was ever was......Billy Idol ' White Wedding'. How the heck do you first dance to that?????? The Dogmother
Another weird one is John Lennon's "imagine" I remember singing along to that in Hyde Park with millions of other people, all in tears on the day he died It's a lovely song, but I can't hera it now without feelign so sad and remembering that moment. Isn't it funny how songs bring back memories? Whenever I hear Peter Gabriel singing Games Wwithour Frontiers, it reminds me of being in the 6th form common room at school, that and Heart of glass by Blondie. Rhapsody
(I tell people that it was "love in an elevator" - but it wasnt really) We got married in St Lucia in 1993 and it was a weird situation cos there was a wedding every day (sometimes 2) on the resort. Every couple seemed to have picked 'Unchained Melody' as a first dance and so every day at about 11am and 3pm you would hear "Whooooooa my loooooove, my darling......" blasting out of the speakers on the dance floor. All us honeymooners around the beach or pool would raise our Daquiris and cheer
Helly Welly
Our first dance was "Stuck in the middle". "Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right" seemed particularly appropriate
Cinnamon
We didn't have a song of our own,so the DJ chose one for us & I have,to this day, never forgiven him. It was "Hello" by Lionel Ritchie
Guest
We had 'Have I Told You Lately' by Rod Stewart - still makes me all gooey eyed, thinking about it (nearly 11 years on!)
Jules.
We didn't have an "evening do" at our wedding.... neither of us could face getting up in front of everybody & having the first dance! We were young & shy then... now we are just getting older. Our 10 yo's friend commented this week on the photographs that we have on display, one showing Alexander as an 8 month-old with us ( I was a competition winner form Paul Yaffe studios!), & one taken 18 months ago just before his grandad went to live in rural France. Isaac said we'd changed a bit, & I said we had got older, he said "No, you have dyed your hair now!" In fact, I dyed my hair blonde THEN, now it is natural brunette with lots of grey wiry bits
Guest
We didn't have an evening do either. But we did have an anthem in the church service with words from Compline - 'save us from unchastity'. If it had been another couple I would have laughed about that for ages! We just like the anthem and all our friends came and sang it for us. 22 years ago now! bronze
We had an evening do but I refused to have a first dance. If I was doing it again I wouldnt have wasted the money on an evening do either not there was anything wrong with it just could have spent the money on something better. Couperwife
that reminds me of that film "4 weddings and a funeral" the first couple danced like that for their first dance too. it was quite funny
AnnieP
Our fisrt dance was hysterical, as we had a barn dance!
theherd123
OH & I chose Van Morrisons 'Someone like you' for our first dance A lady called Melanie Marshall sang the Hallelujah Chorus for us in church while we signed the register, it was absolutely beautiful Edited May 11, 2007 by Guest
redfrock
We had 'Perfect Day' by Lou Read. I didn't want a first dance but we were heckled into it by the army boys. I was really lucky - I walked to the church next door but one from my parents house, my husband and the best man walked from our house, about 8 minutes away, then we all went back to my parents house to the marquee in the garden and had gorgeous Greek food cooked by friends and relatives of the family. It really was a perfect day! aaaaahhhhhhhh, such fond memories. trouble is I have such a huge family (thats the trouble with us greeks; everybody is immediate family ) - that I did feel the wedding was a bit on the large side (about 150 people) and that I couldn't spend as long as i wanted with everybody. I would love to do it all over again though - with the same husband of course!
