What do you feed your layers?

Recommended Posts

What do you feed your laying girls and why? (As in their main feed - not treats or supplements).

I'm currently giving mine Organic Omlet Chicken Feed because it was convenient to order online at the time. It's doing a fine job but I have to order it online and it has a shelf life of six weeks. I might be persuaded to try something else...

Also, mash or pellet? Is there really any difference or preference to the chicken?

Hi, mine get 1) garvo mini chick growers (got it for the sablepoots when they were little & they still love it)

2) garvo alphamix hugely expensive (well for me) but they love it :!: I feed it in the afternoons only. 3) wiggley wigglers layers mash + bokashi My big girls + pekins get this & they love it.

Have tried all sorts of pellets over the last couple of years but other than the above they just haven't been interested :( When this lot of wiggley wigglers is finished, I think I'll give Omlet feed a go.

Mine get farmgate layers pellets, as it's what the farm where I got the chickens sell. It seemed quite cheap, the girls seem to like it, and lots of lovely eggs good hard egg shells so far. Only had them 4 months, on my 2nd 20kg bag. Not sure whether to start trying different things, or stick with what I'm using as they like it? With only 2 girls if I change to something else and they don't eat it it would be wasted.

Allen and Page mash here.

It's what I can get locally, and better than the only other local alternative - can't remember what it was called, but was cheap and nasty and didn't look nearly so good as the Allen and Page, and the chooks seem to like it a lot more. And they look healthier on it , and their poo's don't smell as much...

Prefer the Mash - keeps them quieter in the mornings as it takes longer for them to eat their fill, although it can get messy of OH overfills the feeder, so Fred can flip the food everywhere... Good job the other two like eating it off the ground!
