Chook n Boo Mum
Little Sage hatched early yesterday morning & is now very adept at climbing up on Lavender's back, via the water pot......................and Parsley has yet to be seen in the full light of day having hatched this morning There are still 2 eggs under Lavender, we'll see whether she stays put on them or not later today. They are our first "home grown" hatch..........Sage's biological mum is Acorn, my little black frizzle from Redwing's flock last summer, and Dad is Baby the little chap I hand reared last year after Holly became the mother from hell after her failed hatch & equally failed addition of day-olds ......having checked the nest boxes this morning, Holly appears to be trying a pancake impression again .........sorry poppet, no can do Sha x
Jools
What a lovely picture. My broodies usually make the decision for themselves about their eggs and they're usually right. Only once did I have one leave the nest when the last egg had just started - still, that's what damp tea towels and heat lamps are for isn't it! Good luck with the rest. The Dogmother
That's a lovely video Sha - what gorgeous wee chickies and a good mum I love the way he goes mountaineering on her back

craftyhunnypie
Awww it's a little Pingu, just like my little Penguin was as a chick! She's a 24 week old black frizzle now. Sooo cute, I love Lavender - very sweet. Emma.x
Chook n Boo Mum
I think they may both be Acorn & Baby chicks, they are so similar, Parsley has a darker head then Sage, but the same little yellowy grey wings etc Here's a new pic & vid from this morning.....Sage is on the left in both of them......... Lavender has vacated the nest & done the most ghastly toxic broody poo ...........I've candled the remaining eggs.....the Pekin one was an early fatality and the blue Jasmin one shows the air sac & the rest is just dark, can see no definition in anything..............do I open the shell & have a look (with a peg firmly attached to my nose, or a bucket on standby ) Sha x
The Dogmother
Aww, they are just gorgeous Sha What day is the remaining (uncertain egg on?) I usually leave any 'uncertains' until day 23 to be sure but it sounds dud to me. You have two lovely chickies there, and mum could probably do with some tonic in the water to help her recover. What a clever girl she is.
Chook n Boo Mum
Can I put life guard in the bubbas water? It's in the water she can reach but they can't at the mo.......... Today is day 23 & she's left the nest & scrabbling around with the little ones in the main cage.........I've got the Jas egg tucked in my jacket in case anyone said keep it , though it's not so warm as when Lavender was sitting on it.........I'm tempted to go with the "mama knows best" train of thought, but still hanging onto the vague hope of there being a chance She's an absolute sweetie, she lets me pick up & pet the bubbas without any sign of stress..unless a hairy muppet comes up for a sniff, then she goes all defensive, bless her Sha x
The Dogmother
I've always used it in the chick's water, well diluted though. If she's a bit pale as broodies often are, you could give her the odd drop of Nutri-drops if you have some, it'll help to get her back up to par. They tend to neglect themselves even when the chicks are hatched and will give the babies all the choicest crumbs. She sounds like a great mother. Jools
Mum will get a protein boost from the chick crumb too which will help her recover condition more quickly. I can't decide who is the proudest momma - you or Lavender!
Chook n Boo Mum
It's a close run thing Jools She's the first one I'e actually seen through from beginning to end at close quarters......I've had broodies in the garden, but she's my "house chook"..she was battered badly back before the snow arrived in December so I brought her indoors to heal & recover, when she went back outside she was picked on again & refused to move from the house for a whole day & night, then moulted almost every feather over night as the frozen weather really kicked off, so back indoors she came......she's had her "sister" Oak in to pal up again & go back out...........didn't work again , so she's stayed in ever since..the plan is to integrate her with the chicks when they are all ready, or keep them apart but together in a seperate run whichever is most appropriate at the time There's no way I would have let a broody hatch outside yet, it's still too cold at night IMHO even this far south, but as she's indoors, I thought why not ......and here we are, two gorgeous little pompoms & a happy mama Sha x

Chook n Boo Mum
I like vids too .........photos are so....... flat ....and blurry when I take them as they all flit about like tasmanian devils when the camera comes out Sha x

The Dogmother
It's very hard to get photos of chicks, Sha - they're like popping corn I took loads of the last lot and had to delete most of them

Chook n Boo Mum
Love that description Clare, popping corn is so very apt Wish I'd had the vid on this morning, Sage was preening on the step into their bed box, over stretched under his tummy & rolled off like a little ball of tumbleweed ......looked very bewildered as he righted himself back on the edge of the step again I say He, because I think Sage might be a he & Parsley a her..........what d'ya fink? Sage..... Parsley........ Parsley's isn't so clear, but there's nothing there anyway
The Dogmother
Hmmm, could be, but a bit early to tell. Most of my last lot were striped or black and white, so they either looked like miniature bumble bees or penguins

Chook n Boo Mum
She's a lavender Pekin & is very fluffy...........she's a complete poppet, lets me do anything with her and the babies I still think Sage is a boy & Parsley a girl too Lewis...........and they've got little wing feathers poking through now........would the little monsters stay still for me to photograph them.......would they heck I'll try again tomorrow, hopefully someone else will hold the camera We're away for a few days next week, I shall miss my little ones even more than all the big'uns & the pooches, the little ones will change so much in 3 days............wonder if I can sneak them into the Premier Inn...do you think housekeeping would notice
chick wiggle
Probably, but i would love to see the look on the cleaners face!
goodinparts
Oh BOTHER, Sha!!! Now look what you've done!I thought I was OK to look at pics of chicks but your video has really exacerbated my Morehens... But I CANT & MUSTNT try & hatch this year. Am really pushing my luck with the family expanding the flock as fast as I am & I'm too much of a wimp to cope with boys and...and....and.... But those videos are way too much to bear. Congratulations (she says, through gritted teeth ) Those are such lovely babes & such a gorgeous mum too.
