Attila the Hen - Radio4 - Tues 29 Mar 11am

Recommended Posts

HI All

There is what sounds like an amusing programme on Radio 4 on Tuesday morning, I expect it will be available afterwards via LIstenAgain/Iplayer

The fashion for keeping chickens in your back garden shows no sign of waning, but Natalie Haynes has heard some dark rumours about the true habits of the hen. Can they be true? Natalie's own chicken knowledge being limited entirely to their lives in Ancient Rome, she hears from chicken breeders and keepers; but perhaps the most keen insight is from ornithologist Mark Cocker, who explains how things look from the chickens' own perspective. Poultry and people can be very good for one another, but like any relationship it does require respect.

Some of the trailers they've played so far have had me chuckling...including a rather resigned-sounding man saying "you should ask my wife. She started with 4 hens, now she's got 47".

Me too- I love the way he instantly corrects the original number he comes up with- quickly adding another two to the amount!

It was funny and did make me laugh  but it would be nice to get something that takes our hobby a bit more seriously. So far reporters seem to see is as something of a joke which doesn't really explain why there is this sudden massive take off of back garden chicken keeping. Could it be because they provide an antidote to stressed lives? I'd like to hear something that explores this more seriously.

Whatever, my OH has set off in the car right now . . . . with a box :anxious: Said something about 'rounding up from 8 to 10'

I missed it.

I wasn't too worried as I assumed it would be on Iplayer - but the listing says "not available on Iplayer" and, when I click the "why" link, it seems it's not going to be available.

I've emailed Natalie Haynes to see if she will be adding the audio to her website.

Bother.

Just heard back from Natalie (the presenter), she said it should be on Iplayer later today:

Hello there,

I think it will go up on iPlayer later today (it says 'coming soon' on their page now...). It will go up on my website too, but not for a few weeks, as the guy who runs the site is away climbing in Nepal. Unlikely, I know, but true.

Cheers, Natalie
