what do you think of this series of Gardeners World ?

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or does anyone else think that gardeners world has taken a nose dive this series I used to so look forward to Friday nights programme, admittedly I cant stand Monty Don  but so far this series has been pretty boring and It just doesn't hold my attention. I think it has lost some of it's lustre due to the change of location and presenters in general hopefully it will pick up.

I like MD, but I also thought Toby and his team were excellent and I can't really understand why they've been taken off the programme. I have to agree that I think this series is boring, in fact I'm not watching anymore. Its partly because its Monty at work in his garden and I just don't find it particularly engaging - I'd rather have less of the presenter, his personality, his garden and his plant tastes and more general purpose gardening practicalities. As we know, you can't please all the people all the time (!) and I think from the other thread on GW lots of people are enjoying it.

LIke many amateurs gardners, turn it on but am so disappointed. :( I watch it to see what I should be doing now in the garden, what to sow, how to dig, some basic stuff to get started etc but nothing of the kind. MD talks as though we are all experts and know what he is saying. At least TB spoke at a basic level, same as Alys.

There are no programmes on TV now to encourage the novice gardner to get started and show how - even Ground Force gave you some basic starters. It would be nice to see a programme that is shown starting in spring and shows the novice and keen gardners what you should be doing, what to grow & how and keeping on top of things.

HHmmmmmm...... any programme makers on this forum?

I've actually started watching it again as I like Monty Don - I couldn't get into the last series at all and I used to watch it regularly back when Alan T and before him Geoff Hamilton.

I'm no gardening expert but I like the fact they give you hints as to what you could be doing in your garden at that time.

Just watched the last 2 episodes of it on Iplayer. Really like Monty. I wouldn't brake if Rachel de wotsit stepped off the kerb. I like Alys/Toby though.

Ditto ..... that's what I think too.

I loved Alys, that other show she did, can't remember the name, was great.

I think Monty is awfully 'worthy' in this series harping on about his acres of land and how he has nurtured it over 20 years fair play but not everyone has the luxury of a garden that size. I think Toby and Alys had just about pitched it right and with a bit of tweaking it would have grown into a good series. Shame they didn't get the chance. ITV or some other channel snap 'em up!!!!

Definitely with you on this one. 30 mins per week for those interested in gardening and how many hours on how to sell your junk to make money, have someone trash your house in the guise of giving it a makeover, etc, etc :wall:

We're in the process of giving our garden a complete makeover and whilst not complete novices, we could really do with some guidance. Mr Titchmarsh is my hero - explaining things simply without being patronising. Have spent several evenings recently watching old episodes (all of them  ) of How to be a Gardener - very inspirational. The good news is, he's supposed to be started a new gardening series soon

Yes, I really love watching Carol Klein too, she has such a passion. I much preferred Toby's style (but then I was an Alan Titchmarsh fan too) and I miss Alys. Joe Swift's enthusiasm is inspiring but I really don't enjoy Rachel Whatsist at all. I'm watching it because I've watched it for more than a decade, but if they decide to dump Monty and bring back Toby, I'll be a happy bunny.

I am so glad that it isn't just me that has been disappointed with this new series I too find Carol Klein very inspirational :!: Alys fowler had a talent for keeping it simple but enthusing you to have a go I liked following Joe swift on his allotment he even used to get tips off the old boys brilliant for me as I got my allotment last year that I work myself him indoors doesn't do gardening I just find Monty's garden doesn't inspire I haven't found anything that I could scale down given my postage stamp I think his is a very structured and personal garden it is probably lovely but its style and scale does not transfer well to the masses and is not a patch on Berryfields there at least there was a little of something that everyone could scale to the average garden. Both Alys's Victorian London Garden and Carol's Devon Garden had me riveted as I could see how there style and scale could be adapted even for my titchy garden. Personally I would rather not watch it than be disappointed why oh why do they always have to fix things that aren't broke

I do like Monty and I'm glad he's been reinstated, I'm afraid I didn't like Toby Buckland and Alys Fowler, with them GW became more like Playschool, but for me, it's been all down hill since Alan Titchmarsh left, he was fab as was the lovely Geoff Hamilton (I think the Barnsdale days were the best for GW)? However, I'd be very happy to see the return of Peter Seabrook and Geoffrey Smith (apologies to both for undoubtedly mis spelling their names). I know Geoffrey is no longer with us, but I loved Friday evenings watching them both on GW as a nipper with my Dad - a very tough act to follow.
