Diatom or redmite powder as preventative and to splodge in dust bath and nest box. Chair or bench for chicken gazing
j00lz_12366
ah yes..I have a brush, I have dustpans etc When I get my chickens whats the best thing to do about redmite-I was going to get some powder to put in their dustbath, but should i try to treat them as soon as we get them? (we're having ex batts) Also is there anything i should have in an emergency/first aid box?
Plum
When I get new chickens I always give them a dusting straight away to prevent problems. Useful things for first aid are some vet powder to pop on any cuts and some purple spray to hide any red from scratches cuts to prevent pecking. Other stuff you can get as you go along

j00lz_12366
lol..i dont tend to lie in that often....or didnt.. what do you all use for cleaning your eglus, bars etc?
Henchanted
Hello really excited for you. I've had my 4 hens for 7 weeks, learned a huge amount and still learning but for what its worth my best tips are TIP 1 TONGS find some cheap, metal, short handles kitchen tongs for poo picking. I use these when I let them out every the morning, collecting the poops from the nest box and base of the eglu into a dustpan (or pooppan ) and tipped straight into the compost bin without having to wear gloves or getting hands too dirty. That way they have a nice freshish smelling house all day. I often remove the roosting bars and either use cheap baby wipes to clean them or a proper quick wash with the hose if really bad, I only do a full clean out every 7-14 days depending on need. TIP 2 DIATOM Diatomaceous Earth powder is a great all rounder for mites and lice, used a) straight on the chickens and b) added to a mixture of sand and bedding or dry compost for their dust bath and c) sprinkled inside the eglu in all the crevices and d) mixed into the bedding, (when my hens arrived they were riddled but now mite free). TIP3 BOKASHI BRAN The best thing since sliced bread at keeping nasty niffs at bay and healthy chickens. Basically its bran coated in good bacteria that a)helps the chickens digestion so add a little to their feed and b) it starts to quickly break down the poo so it stops it being stinky, (also used as compost accelerator) so mix it into their dust bath and mix it with the beddingg for the nest and house but also sprinklle in the run (usually mixed with bedding, a little sand and hardwood chippings etc.. TIP 4 'METHOD' ALL PURPOSE, NATURAL NON-TOXIC CLEANER FROM SAINSBURYS I love the lavender fragrance (clear bottle/purple liquid) and at around £2 it's a whole lot cheaper than the dedicated pet friendly sprays. Spray and wipe off or to deep clean, spray, leave for 10 mins then thoroughly rinse and dry. Thanks for reading, good luck
Henchanted
Actually the Sainsbury's Method spray is over £3 now (there's inflation for you)
