Our Broody Pekin has been sat on five of her eggs since April 2nd, and now 21 days later one of the five eggs has hatched! No name yet, waiting to see how he/she does, and if any more of the eggs hatch over the next 24/48hrs. A quick morning (day 22) update for everyone, I've just removed a further 3 opened shells from the broody hutch, so that's certainly 4 out of 5 eggs hatched . EC1 (Easter Chick 1) made it through the night and is very active this morning. Mum's keeping him/her in control though while protecting the other 3 who must have hatched overnight. Only seen a small glimpse of them so far, when I lift Mum to remove broken shells, but they are making a lot of tweeting sounds from under her. atsw Posted April 24, 2011 Author Share Posted April 24, 2011 We have 5 out of 5 . Here's three of them. Three are coloured like the chick in the photo I posted yesterday, two are the classic gold/yellow colour. Being Pekins, all have wonderful fluffy feet . All five seem to be doing well so far, Mum is teaching EC1 how to feed, the other four (being approx. 1 day younger) are still staying put under Mum for now. In that 1st photo, the one in the food pot definite frizzle, the other black & white to the left of food pot I think is also a frizzle..Oh & the beige one at the front I also think is frizzle. Just generally more fluffy, although the one in the food pot I think I can see curl shapes at the wing tips. Don't quote me on what I think. I'll set up a little slideshow of their progress like I did for the Pekin chicks in 2009 (of which Biscuit was one!). My other Pekin, Caramel, went broody a few days ago, approx 2 days before Biscuits eggs hatched. As I wasn't sure about the viability of Biscuits eggs (didn't candle them at any stage), I let Caramel sit on 6 of her eggs. Given that all five of Biscuits eggs subsequently hatched, I think there's a good chance that Caramel's will all be good too, which means by Friday 13th May I might have 11 new Pekins . atsw Posted April 29, 2011 Author Share Posted April 29, 2011 The chicks will be one-week old tomorrow, and so far all are doing well. Their wing feathers are just starting to show. There's certainly going to be a few frizzles, perhaps even four of the five . Today I moved Biscuit and the chicks from the rabbit hutch into the WIR (a specially sectioned off area, obviously!), and after a few anxious moments, Mum and the chicks settled well. The other girls are mighty unimpressed with the new editions, but they'll get used to it!! Here's a couple of pictures taken earlier this afternoon. I think it's 4 girls and 1 boy. No prizes for guessing which I think is the boy in the picture above . There's more pictures showing their development from hatch to now in a slideshow here. atsw Posted May 20, 2011 Author Share Posted May 20, 2011 Just to bring everyone up-to-date on Biscuit's chicks, here's a few pictures at 4 weeks old. Four of the chicks are very frizzled (2 black, 2 brown), the one remaining black chick is best described as 'part' frizzled . I think it's now pretty clear that we have at least two boys, the redness of their wattles is showing up very well now they are a month old. I'm stil not sure about the brown one that DD is holding in the picture above . I've also added a number of additional pictures to my on-line slideshow, which shows their development over the last 4 weeks. It shows how they really have grown, although not that surprising when I tell you they have eaten their way through 5kg of chick crumbs that time .
