Kindle - to buy or not to buy?

Recommended Posts

Indeed, you are not supposed to switch it totally off between reads

I've just looked through the instructions PDF and can't find where it says this - where did you read this please ?

Thanks, H

I was told this by an Amazon rep when my first Kindle broke.

He asked if I turned it off totally between reads or put it into sleep mode - I told him I turned it off,& he advised that it is preferable to put it into sleep mode, especially as it uses no battery power in this mode,if wireless is switched off.

It also means it can pick up any updates automatically.

Its up to you of course, but that is what I do now with no ill effect to my Kindle at all.

I have a gel cover for my kindle and love it and a slip in case which offers plenty of protection. I used to have a book type cover for my Sony but found myself taking it out to read as found the case a hindrance so i suppose it depends how you like to hold it, I like mine naked  Also the Kindle ones are stupid prices!

I never thought I would want one of these, but reading all of your reviews I have decided that I now want one. :D

It is my birthday next week, I am asking for money so I can get one, which would you all recommend, the wifi for the 3g? I am swinging towards the wifi, because if I go away I will download before I go. Thanks :D:D

The 3g is so much more expensive!

I would go for the wifi. That is what I have (a birthday present) and as long as you have wifi at home, you can download loads of books before you go away. I suppose the 3g is good if you want newspapers etc when away, but I wouldn't bother myself with that.

I love my kindle and bought it on recommendation from here. I have the 3G one and would definately recommend as I often fancy something different when out and about so sit on the bus and download something new.

I have just come back from a holiday in Zante and with my waterproof cover I laid around easily reading in far more positions than normal  whilst others had pages falling out left right and centre. Love it

Can I hijack this with a question. I have 2 Kindles registered to my account, mine and OH's. When I order a book it gets sent to my Kindle in the usual way but goes into my OH's archived items and has to be downloaded separately. I would have assumed that both Kindles would get all of the books ordered?

Is it because I ordered the book through my Kindle rather than on the website?

Quick question...if I ever want to erase books off my kindle once read - how would I do it? Not that I need to, as it holds sooooo many - but if I ever did get 3500 books, then how would I do it?

If you connect it to your PC, you can see the Kindle like a hard disc drive. You can simply click on files to delete them (or move them to your PC hard drive so you can restore them later if you want to). I copy the files to my PC every now and then (as a back up) - I know you can get them back from Amazon, but I have books from other places as well.

Highlight the book and use the right arrow, then 'delete from this device'. It will still be in your Amazon account.

I have separate folders on my Kindle now (slight OCD with folders  )

*to read

*currently reading

*books read

etc etc

I sort mine into genre (fiction, bio, travel etc),but then also have a 'to read' folder.

So the books in 'to read' are also in a genre folder to, & I just remove them from 'to read' when I have finished them - works a treat :P
