squiffs
A friend of mine in the US got a kindle... apparently... I say apparently because she says it has a colour screen but isn't the kindle fire (which she is 'glad about'). I didn't think there was any other kind of kindle that had a colour display? So either she's in denial or she doesn't have a kindle, possibly a nook or a kobo or something... There are no other colour kindles... right? Adelochick
Hi all, I've had my kindle for a year now and so glad because I actually enjoy just reading for pleasure again at long last. Just in case you've not noticed, amazon has 'the 12 days of christmas offer' on at the mo, which started on 26th so have a look at these (I've already bought 3 new books so far!). bluekarin
I will say I don't feel as immersed as I usually do when reading. Might be the books I am reading on it (freebies and very lite) so I will try a bought one and see how that is. I do still love it though. Chortle Chook
I confess to being a Bah Humbug when it comes to the Kindle. After reading all the pluses for it on here, I was given one for Xmas but took it back to John Lewis today It was all just too monochrome for me. When they bring out ones with colour, and ones with a touch screen rather than buttons on the side, then I'll re-consider it. For now I would rather go to my little local bookshop and chat to the nice smiley lady there about books, then order one if she does not have it already and pick it up whenever I next go by (she gets them in by the next day), than download books from Amazon. If I had to use one of those huge, impersonal, chain bookshops then the Kindle would probably seem much more appealing, but for now it just took away that personal relationship feeling between me, my loved books and my local bookshop and seemed like just one more gadget. Ain't Nobody Here
OH and are vaguely considering getting a Kindle so I've been reading through all this with great interest. We don't buy books often at all, tending to use our excellent library service (where you can order any book you want for free for collection from your local one). My concerns are a) that it would end up costing us much more than we currently spend (which is next to nothing) b) could we manage sharing one between us? I suppose we could each read a "real" book while the other is using the Kindle (OH is a really slow reader though ) c) how limiting is it only having access to Kindle books? Cinnamon
Well if you don't read much I would say there is little point I read a book a week I reckon,so its wonderful for me,plus I like to have all my books with me when I go away (AND I now have some clear shelves in the office,as I have sent all my paperbacks to Oxfam!) Sharing one should be ok,so long as you are not both reading the same book,as it will synch to the last page read.... It is not limiting at all to only have access to Kindle books. Almost all of them are available on Kindle now & on 3 occasions when a book I have wanted was not available,I requested it & it was then made available. This isn't true for all genres of course, but most popular literature is available. You can also find them on other sites & convert them with Calibre. Hope the helps
Ain't Nobody Here
We do both read a lot, we just get them from the library rather than bookshops . It's good to know that so many are available for the Kindle. That was one thing we both didn't realise, so thanks!
Chucky Mama
I find the biggest drawback that I have found having an ereader is that people buy me books as presents. I was given 7 books for Christmas and another 3 for my birthday. As a result I read real books more than ebooks On the other hand YS does not get bought books and its loving his new Kindle and has read 2 since Christmas (1 twice!). My 75 year old MIL who is an avid reader was given one at Christmas and she is mortified. She managed to buy 2 books without realising and had to contact Amazon to have them refunded. She much prefers to have a real book and I doubt she will use the Kindle unless someone loads books up for her before a holiday to save space in her suitcase. Cooks
I bought one a while back and just couldn't get to grips with it, preferred the feel of a normal book, so was going to sell it as I now have an iPad too, but i have recently become in love with it and am reading Water for Elephants at the moment I Have the 3G wifi model with a purple case and it's called Lynsey's Kindle
sadietoo
I love my new Kindle, it's a whole new reading experience for me. As someone who often falls asleep reading I particularly like the fact that I don't have to hunt around for the page I was on the next time I pick it up! I also love books, but I think there is a time and place for everything. For travel and holidays, and the convenience of not having to worry about storage the Kindle wins hands down, for the pleasure of a favourite book...you need the real thing ...Hopefully both will endure! I didn't see the movie, but thought the book was just fabulous My Kindle is called Boris. My next one will be called Colin,God of sex, after the character in Love Actually (which will be fine until I need to phone Amazon & they ask for the Kindle name ) The husbands one is going to be called Kylie

Seagazer
Oh I loved Water for Elephants, one of my favourite books from last year. I haven't seen the film. Mine is Annie's Kindle
pips_pekins
I have had my Kindle for about 3 months and love it. I have a problem with my hand and struggle to hold a book comfortably so had almost stopped reading. Having the Kindle has been wonderful. I have spent quite a lot on ebooks but have also downloaded loads of free ones from Amazon. I tried Calibre but could not figure it out :-S. I have found all the books I want are available for Kindle but I guess it depends on what you enjoy reading. I think if I was ok with books and could find what I want in the library, I might not have bothered with one. I tried audio books first but didn't enjoy being read to, so this is great for me. Cooks
I know what you mean, have a tremor in my hands and when it's bad bad I find turning a paper page awkward whereas the kindle is peasy

Patricia W
I was bought one for Christmas as my OH was becoming buried in my books - and rather hate to say it but I am converted! I buy between one and two books a week and I find I'm spending far less as there are so many free or cheap books. Even up to date ones seem as cheap or cheaper on the kindle. And I'm amazed at the variety - I just downloaded some really good recipe books.
Cooks
I have the kindle with keyboard and have a leather case already, I have never had a need for a light but going abroad on a night flight and thought I might want to read discreetly, rather than me having to buy another case with a light is there a light you would recommend that clips on that gives a good light coverage of the page. Cinnamon
Yep - I got one on Amazon the other day. CLICKY Its great - very lightweight, feels strong & is very flexible & easy to read by.....it lights up the Kindle very well. It was only £9 last week,in the sale though
Cooks
Thanks I have seen those on eBay too, but was worried about the page coverage so didn't buy, it seems some are one led and some are two. I will place an order
Ain't Nobody Here
I've just discovered that Edinburgh City Libraries have an e-book section where you can download books for free to your Kindle etc or computer . Not read one yet as I'm still getting to grips with how it works but it looks promising. They have "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" (recommended on the Book Recommendations thread!) so I think I'll start with that one. May be worth checking out your council's library to see if they do it too . Just discovered that if you download Adobe Digital Reader they have some free books to download too.
