my 12 year old has had about 8 nosebleeds in the last 2-3 days, they are short in duration but quite a lot of blood.

thing is, I remember at that age I used to get a lot of them, and am pretty sure I grew out of it, and it was 'just one of those things', I certainly dont remember my mother ever taking me to the doc or anything.

I dont want to be an over-anxious mother, so someone please tell me she will grow out of it!

she might be getting anemic especially losing a lot of blood each time.

My 12 year old daughter gets nose bleeds on a regular basis, more often than not they start when she's asleep so she wakes up in a blood bath! According to her doctor, there is a part inside her nose that is more inflammed than it is in a normal person but there's nothing to worry about.

Rosie has more or less grown out of hers (aged 13) she inherited it from her dad. It's worth getting it investigated just in case there's 'owt to be concerned about.

I'll keep an eye on her for a few days and see how we go. she's tall, as skinny as a rake (naturally, grrrrrr) but constantly on the go, eats like a horse etc so I dont think there's much wrong with her!!

I always had nose bleeds as does my mother and her father. Even so when my eldest was a toddler the nursery insisted I took him to the doctor about his nosebleeds. As this little boy ran around the surgery my lovely gp looked at me and said 'I could send him for tests but do you honestly think there is anything wrong with him?' he did it in such a nice way i didn't feel like I'd been wasting his time (much ). My eldest seems to have mostly grown out of them but my youngest still has bad bleeds quite often. I must arrange a chat with their school to see what the arrangement is if they have a bad bleed in an exam and if necessary I'll take them to the doctors for advice and a note coming up to GSCEs so invigilators are aware it's a known problem.

 

So if she has a history of nose bleeds I wouldn't worry, if it's a very recent thing I would take her to get it checked out. A good doctor will be nice about it.

 

I had lots of tests as a child and as a teen I went to the hospital for what I thought would be another blood test and they cauterised my nose that was a great move (not) now my nose bleeds down the back of my throat and it's disgusting.

I used to have them as a child and both of my boys have them. YS's are quite regular but he has a deviated septum in his nose and I think this makes his worse. He's also had some of the tissue in his nose lasered away so its probably a bit more sensitive. He also has hayfever so can sneeze for England. School were always on at me to have him checked out because of the nose bleeds. As you say as long as they seem healthy enough I think its just one of those things.

 

ES's nose bleeds were worse in the amount of blood that used to come out. My hubby did take him to A & E once as it wasn't stopping. They do say you should get it seen if its still really bleeding after 20 minutes. ES hasn't had any for a couple of years now so hopefully he's grown out of them.

 

My cousin's ES had to have his nose cauterised in some way as he really did have bad ones. I think it really helped him.

I suffered really badly with these when growing up and was frequently at the hospital to have my nose cauterized with strange little matchstick thingys (1970s- 80s) which used to make my eyes water really badly at the time and didn't seem to have much effect on the frequency of my nosebleeds.

 

My eldest son and daughter have also grown up with regular bleeds both starting as toddlers. My son seems to have grown out of them, not having had any since last summer, (he's almost 16) but my daughter has had many recently due to the high temperatures and, I believe, the stormy conditions lately. I recall suffering badly whenever storms were around - perhaps some extra sensitivity to pressure??? She always looks pale during and just after one but is fine after a short rest.

 

The children have both taken them in their stride as they knew from an early age how to deal with them. I've never taken them to the doctors but I bet I would have done if I hadn't suffered myself as it can be a little scary. If it sets your mind at rest pay a visit to the doctor. Best of luck.

I had terrible nose bleeds as a child and teen, but like the other posters on this thread, grew out of them. I don't think I've had one for about 12 years now.

 

It turned out that much of the problem with my bleeds were the nasal sprays that I was prescribed by the doctor for my hay fever. We didn't realise for a long time that they were steroid based and so were thinning the membranes and blood vessels in my nose, causing more frequent bleeds.

 

I gave up the sprays and just got on with the hay fever after that It took a few years after stopping the sprays for the nose bleeds to stop (membranes healing maybe?). Thankfully I have now grown out of both the nose bleeds and the hay fever.

 

Is your daughter taking any medications that could be exacerbating the bleeds, or is it just one of those things?

Might be worth getting it checked out just for peace of mind. My 5 year old son has been getting fairly regular nose bleeds for the last year or so and I was a bit concerned, never having had them myself. It turns out he has a polyp up his nose which is causing them. No treatment required unless they get really severe but nice to know the cause in any case.

best to get it checked out but i think some people are just prone... i have had nosebleeds for as long as i can remember in fact ive had about 4 myself in the last day and a half lol

 

I get them in all circumstances, when im asleep, walking, sat working, driving etc. The most memorable was whilst driving round the arc du triumph in paris - now that was fun with the OH shoving McDonalds napkins up my nose whilst i was trying to exit lol

 

And they bleed a lot - i have had my nose courterised 7 times and i still get them - i just keep tissues handy!

It could be caused by anything, best to go to the GP and get it checked.

My son used to get heavy frequent nose bleeds often when he was asleep he grew out of them apparantly my OH used to have them too

Could you book an appt with a clinic nurse? Best get it checked out for peace of mind...

worth getting a once over to check nothing nasty, other than that just go with the flow (sorry for the pun). I used to have loads, which were worse in warm weather. I grew out of them by the time i was 19. I got taken to hospital once as it was quite bad and wouldnt stopped, but stopped as soon as we got the hospital. Never had any problems...
