Mareks or something else ?

Recommended Posts

I have an appt for 10 30 at the vet but just wanted some ideas before I go. Found my bluebelle huddled on the run floor this am - she is limping and that leg is completely floppy, her opposite wing is hanging down. Not eating or drinking, her tummy is not swollen and can't feel an egg, no rattling or watery nose or eyes. Ideas ?

Where did you get her from? Most breeders Vaccinate for Mareks on Day 1. You should double check their vaccination programme.

Sounds like it to me... sorry :?

The Marek's vaccine is (apparently) notorious for not 'taking', in an ideal world it should be repeated after 6 months, but the cost for a few backyard hens would be prohibitive. Although Marek's is one of those background diseases in most flocks, it rarely rears it's head unless a hen is otherwise poorly or stressed (say by a bad moult).

Quarantine her (bit late now though), it is rare but they can pull through. Sadly the outlook afterwards isn't good :(

Broken leg (I did think it was very floppy) and a bad break too. RIP Hebe/Hermia you were an excellent chicken :D She had a last meal of rice which she loved and I gave her a big kiss. I am however relieved that I don't have Mareks in my flock, have no idea how she did it but think heard the fox last night so may have spooked them all. Very glad my upped defences are working though as no sign of digging anymore.
