bekibutton
Hello all, Hoping you can help with a plant identification issue! A friend of mine planted some sunflowers a while and this plant has appeared, and it's obviously not a sunflower! Though it looks vaguely tomato-ey I think it might be a pepper instead, or something similar? Any suggestions would be gratefully received Becki
LolaLayla
I am no expert but sweet peppers leaves are smoother edged and the fruits have a lumpier look to them. It does not look like the tomatoes I have either as the sepals (I think that is the correct term) are tightly onto the fruit with this plant whereas with tomatoes they seem to sit proud of the fruit (if that makes sense). I would love to know what it is though
sjp
no it's not a pepper but I think it's one of the night shade family they do seem to turn up a lot as rougue plants I think from bird seed but I'm 100% sure as it's been a while since I had the conversation with on of the plot holders on the alotment who knows about this sort of thing just had another look at the photos the flowers look like potato flowers so that means it is all most certainly nightshade of some sort or another Edited July 25, 2011 by Guest
Old Speckled Hen
Aubergine?
jasperaliceuk
I would say that is a Nightshade too - dug one out myself today. Aubergine leaves would be big and hairy. Sue
bekibutton
Thanks for the help guys, said friend has now been told by one of his friends that it's a nightshade so given the response on here I think it's fairly safe to say that's what it is! He'll just have to wait and see if it turns into anything edible won't he? Thanks again Becki
beach chick
he might be better off NOT trying to see if anything edible results!!
Couperwife
if it is nightshade or something like that I would strongly recommend pulling it up and not eating anything that comes off it you dont want to be poisoned

Valkyrie
Agree - a nightshade, although the fruits look quite large compared to normal. Aubergines are usually purple flowers and stems a bit thorny/prickly. Doesn't look like spud leaves either, although the size of the fruits are about the same.
