Plastic bags

Recommended Posts

I say definitely charge for carrier bags. People are just too wasteful. I always take my bags for life to the supermarket, they're much stronger than plastic carriers and you can get much more in them!

I do sometimes think though that the supermarkets/stores are at fault. I've often been asked if I want a bag, even if I'm only buying one or two items. And when I do my grocery shop online and get it delivered they seem to use dozens of bags - very often with one or two items in :wall: I did email the store in question after the first few times but got a pretty rubbish response. If they are happy to let you keep the crates until the next delivery, why, I asked, do they need to put the shopping in plastic bags? Couldn't they at least cut down and fill the bags properly? On the plus side, I give all the bags to the local village shop who re-use them.

I have the Onya mesh bags for markets too - brilliant.

Lavenders_Blue if we're out in the wilds then I use a stick to flick it under a hedge/ out of the way - far more environmentally friendly. For beaches and other walks I take the MukSak, which I then empty when I find a dog poo bin.

That is a really good idea. It's a shame it only comes in one size (ie huge!) as I don't have a dog that does elephant poo

Fab idea though, I'll get one of those.

I had a muksak for a bit, but wasnt really keen on it. tho it would come in handy for keeping sunglasses and little bits and bobs on the beach.... if they did it in different colours it would be cool! I met the lady who runs the company at a police dog event a couple of years ago and did suggest it, but the tooling is expensive apparently.

Try Ocado, they take back and recycle all their own bags.

so do asda...

so do Sainsburys but it seems a waste just to use them once then recycle them.

what you'd rather use them once, then put dog poop in them to make them unable to be used ever again? it's definitely not a 'waste' to recycle something :?

Well I've just ordered one. I'm dog sitting for mum and dad this week, and have just walked round the village swinging a bag of poo :vom::lol: So the muksak is on its way! (Why were you not keen on it by the way, beach chick?)

I don't find it big at all and I'm quite petite, it's a great design and far nicer than walking around with various poo bags dangling from your hand. Neither of my hounds produces big poops so I can fit plenty in for friends if we're out with others.

No, that's not what I meant - I recycle everything I can - I hate waste. I'd just rather see the bags re-used - like our village shop does, for example. Couldn't the supermarkets re-use them? or perhaps Health & Safety wouldn't allow that?

In Florida they started a scheme where there is a plastic bag 'recycling' box at the ENTRANCE of the store and you are encouraged to help yourself to bags for carrying your shopping home. You are also encouraged to put (clean) bags back so they can go round again. Excellent idea I think - it also gets round the problem of forgetting to bring your bags with you.

Now that IS a good idea.

Just out of interest, has anyone ever produced a bag in a shop and received rather an odd look, or is it just me this has happened to?

We have a local co-op which I tend not to use as it is much more expensive than the bigger supermarkets but is great of you only need a couple of things because I can walk there. I went in there for a few things and the shop assistant picked up a bag. I said 'it's ok, I have my own bag thank you' so she looked at me really strangely, almost as if I was offending her by not wanting one of her bags, shrugged and started putting my shopping through the till. :?

When we were in the USA, they gave us brown paper sacks to put our shopping in. Surely this is better for recycling than plastic bags? I realise they're not as robust as plastic but if people only use them once then throw them out anyway rather than re-using, they can be recycled and made into more paper bags......

I like the idea of Te$co's giving points for every bag reused. Pity the others don't adopt it. Especially as I hate Te$co's so much and refuse to go there any more.

Sainsburys do that too.

Somebody tell them round here!!!! We have 2 - one the other side of Basingstoke and one in Camberley. Neither will give you points for using your own bags.
