Guest
I went to the memorial service for Sheila's husband on Tuesday. I am so glad I was able to be there. It was a really lovely service which started with Sheila's elder daughter singing beautifully 'His eye is on the sparrow' completely unaccompanied. It sounded so lovely in the church and I have no idea how she managed to sing with such emotion without giving way to the grief she was obviously feeling. I was very impressed We sang two hymns - The Lord's my Shepherd and Lead us heavenly Father - and with so many people in the church (about 200!) they were sung really well and I didn't at any point feel that my voice was audible above everyone else. Three men from different areas of Shep's life spoke with great feeling. All three of them had difficulty expressing how much Shep meant to them and it was moving to see mature men close to tears. The first spoke of the many fishing trips he and Shep had done together, fishing in many areas of the world with several scary adventures. The second spoke of the wonderful work Shep did as part of a river conservation group, saying that it was only now that the group was discovering just how much more work Shep had done than they realised. The third speaker had been involved with Shep in several bands over about 30 years playing together as recently as June this year. He also spoke of Shep and Sheila's whirlwind romance and their long happy marriage, finishing by saying that Shep meant everything to his wife and four children and conversely they meant everything to him. He was clearly a very special man. After these memories were expressed there was time to reflect on them whilst listening to the very appropriate 'Trout Quintet' by Schubert. At the end of the service the organist played an Air from Handel's Water Music. Little touches like these made the service feel tailor-made. The vicar spoke about what life in Heaven might be like for Shep, with his love of fishing and conservation of rivers, referring to the vision in the Book of Revelation of the city of heaven which has a beautiful crystal river flowing through it. She also talked of Ezekiel's river (Ezekiel 47: "It will come about that every living creature which swarms in every place where the river goes, will live. And there will be very many fish, for these waters go there and the others become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes. And it will come about that fishermen will stand beside it; Their fish will be according to their kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea, very many.) Somehow I was very comforted by this and hope that Shep is indeed enjoying contentment by a wonderful and clean river. Sheila had invited everyone back to her house after the service and judging by the number of people there, I think everyone came! I described myself as one of Sheila's 'Chicken friends' and was very pleased to find that she was describing me in the same way! Sheila, it was a very special day and I hope it was everything you wanted it to be and more. Lots of love to you and your family. xx
The Dogmother
Thank you for the update Ginette, I am sure that it was beautiful. I wasn't able to make it but thought of the family at that time.
