Any tips on cleaning the plastic roosting bars in the Cube

Recommended Posts

We currently have an Eglu and Cube and I'm really struggling to find an easy way to clean the roosting bars in the Cube. The Eglu ones are a lot smaller and I can easily put the ends of them in a bowl of water and scrub them, however the Cube roosting perches are very long and also wider than the Eglu ones. I noticed you can buy spare ones from the Omlet store and people are saying it's a good idea as they can 'soak' one lot of roosting bars and put the spare set in. But how on earth can you soak them when they are are so big. It takes me ages to get them clean :?

I don't think I'd ever want to go in my bath again if I had used it to clean poo off the roosting bars

We don't have a power washer, just a regular hosepipe and because the roosting bars aren't a flat surface it can be difficult to get dry poo off them. After all that cleaning yesterday they are all mucky again today. I was wondering about wiping them with baby wipes as I use them in my parrot's cage, but on parts he can't actually get to, not sure if they are safe to use with hens :?

Someone said they use a (i think thats what it's called) seed tray. Would use a lot less water than a dust bin.

Obviously a bigger version with no holes

Actually I don't think it's a seed tray, just something to put plant pots in and put water in the tray for the roots to soak up the water? Yeah, I don't garden

Sometimes I just use the hose and brush. Other times if it's a bit of stubborn dirt I get a warm bucket of Poultry Shield and a scrubbing brush, just scrub away on the patio, leave it and then give it another going over, rinse with clean Poultry shield - I defy any nasty to live on those bars, or under them! Occasionally I jet wash the whole lot. Have to say the Stalosan has stained the green poo trays though - can't even jet wash that off. Cor powerful stuff that.

I found exactly the same problem. I now use a big rubber trug thingy that horsey folk use to muck out. Basically a big rubber bucket with handles. The cube roosting bars will stand up in it, while I wipe them down.

I use a solution of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle on my eglu and roosting bars. I spray over and leave aside then use hot water and disinfectant and find that anything that's been dried on comes off really easily. I also use a lot of vinegar for cleaning around the house - a bit smelly at the time but works well.

I soak mine in a grow bag tray, which is basically a plastic tray, approx 5cm deep, which is (unsurprisingly!) slighly larger than a grow bag. Seems to do the job nicely.

I did go to B&Q this evening to try and find a grow bag tray. Honestly from the look I got from the asst it made me wonder if she even knew what a grow bag was, never mind a tray for one. Ended up getting a plastic container from the bedroom dept there which I think is for sliding under the bed. Looks the right size for soaking both bars in, but won't know till the morning as the girls have gone to bed now. I did wonder about handing the chooks a tape measure to see if they would measure it for me, but somehow I don't think they would know what I was talking about

Hi, I use a dishmatic washing up brush which is a handle with washing up liquid inside with a sponge and scouring pad at the end from the supermarket, I have one in the kitchen, one in the bathroom and one in the shed!

Yes I have those too, they are very good but I think I must be a bit rough with mine as the green bit on mine tends to come apart from the yellow sponge part quite quickly and I still need to learn the knack of getting the heads off as it's quite hard isn't it, or maybe it's just me

I dropped some pooey water, having cleaned my roosting bars in a tub trug of hot soapy water, over my feet with my crocs on, as I was emptying the trug. It was weird because although I did wash my feet, they were beautifully soft

Maybe chicken poo has other uses - foam bath perhaps or foot revitalising cream :vom::lol:
