Cheeky Chooky
I was so excited as I was going to pick up my 3 Australorp Bantam girls this morning but the person who was going to take me has let me down at the last minute I'm not feeling too good anyway and given the fact that I've still got some bits to get before the girl's arrival anyway, I just think all these things are telling me that I should wait until next year The opportunity to buy the eglu came up suddenly and I'm really pleased that I got it but I've been thinking that I won't get much time with the girls, given the dark evenings and with winter approaching. I'm sure it's the right thing to do but it's going to be hard looking at the empty eglu in the garden for months on end
chestnutmare
Sorry, I can't tell you you're being sensible. I got my chickens in January last year and we had a thin covering of snow when I went off to Malvern to get my girls (from Wales). I'm sure you'll spend a little time each day with the chickens and the weekend. It's not like you need to potty train and take for walks like a dog and be there with them all of the time. Personally I say go for it. What are you waiting for?
Cheeky Chooky
I did have that 'conversation' with myself in my head and told myself to remember that they are chickens! I suppose I'll just have to see if/when I can arrange to get to the breeder. I don't drive, which complicates things a bit
chestnutmare
Don't hurry into anything or rush around trying to find a driver buuuutt... don't let this time of year put you off. Where were you going to get he austrolorp bantams?

blueandwhite
I'm sure when you feel ready you will find a way. Don't forget weekends, days off and holidays. I've just finished a week off and must admit I was fed up with not really seeing the girls in the morning (dark when I was leaving) and for only a short period at night. So this week I've spent lots of time in the garden with them (even let them in the chook free zone! - strict supervision obviously!) and just enjoyed watching their barmy antics. I remember last year sitting out with them in the snow (Tony the Tiger dressing gown and blanket wrapped round me - they didn't seem to notice the frozen wasteland). Snowy
I agree, if you can sort out transport, don't be put off by the time of year! I got my very first hens at the end of November and we had our first egg for Christmas Certainly gave me an incentive to get out into the garden every weekend. Also, if the breeder has them ready now, grab them. He may not have any more next year - anything can happen between now and then!
Cheeky Chooky
Well I rang a garden centre that also sells poultry, which is about 20 minutes away from me (the breeder is over an hour away) and it turns out that they often have hens from her, so they might be able to collect my girls when they go to get some more stock! I've rung the breeder and told her the plan I'm trying to hatch so I just hope I can get the girls this way
Purplemaniacs
I hope it all works out and you get your chooks soon. Chrissie
redcharlie43
Don't let the time of year put you off. I got my first 3 chickens last November. They were 3 sad little ex-bats who were very bald. They made it through the winter in their eglu just fine. Snowy is right. It also gets you outside every day whatever the weather. If you can get hold of the chickens then go for it!!
