Okay thicko here what's a spammer??

Recommended Posts

Not thicko at all. Good for you for asking :)

As I know it, a 'spammer' is someone who sends out mass emails, of little interest, to all and sundry. They are things like marketing hype (can cover all subjects including fake medicines) or those emails where you are supposed to pass them on to friends in order to avoid some dreaded fate like a car crash. They are often used as a means of spreading 'viruses', but even harmless ones just clog up your in-box.

 It is someone that posts something that is purely to promote a product or business or even total nonsense or less commonly thankfully pornographic content. They are often located in India or China. We've had quite a few over the last week

This is an extract of a recent spam post I have removed the web and email address.

Another one unsure here too. Do they look like what you have suggested above on Omlet then? I am thinking htat I would not recognise a spam on here??

They are quite obvious. They usually have strange names like '564hgrt3', but not always. They usually include a link in their first post, or in their signature. The English sometimes doesn't make sense or isn't relevant to the thread...

They also tend to join the forum in the middle of the night, and are based in locations where Omlet are not known to have outlets.

Spammers also resurrect ancient threads which are pertinent to their wares and often copy and paste text from other parts of the forum.

You get a nose for them

Forum names tend to be quirky and personal .. but there is a difference between something like Alis girls and xhox976541 .... or names that are clearly that of a business. If ever a genuine member joins, but uses what is clearly a business name, because they haven't fully understood the rules, they are asked to change it.
