memphisto Posted November 27, 2011 Share Posted November 27, 2011 Finally, I have 4 beautiful ex-batt girls having their first night of freedom in their new home! Firstly, thanks to the BHWT Shropshire team, you did a fantastic job and keepig everything running really smoothly today, I wasn't there long but it was like a military operation! So, I caught a glimpse of lots of little excited girlies wandering about in a shed and saw a few going off to their forever homes before I composed myself to get out of the car (I did have a little cry beforehand ). After making my donation, filling in gift aid forms, I was given the first of my 4, she looked a little nervous but was well feathered (as they all are really), followed by 2 more who were a little chirpier. Then I was asked if I would take one with a poorly toe, it looks like she's lost her nail at some point and she's a little sore to say the least, they said they could pick another but there was something very endearing about this little lady, so I had to have her, as I said, we can work with that, so I gave her a little foot bath when we got home and put some septi- cleanse on it for her. The drive home was sweet, they kept chattering away! I got home and put them in the coop, 2 went straight to sleep , the other two had a little explore and some food and water, one took themselves to bed, the other, although she got down the ramp, she couldn't get back up it, so I pick her up and placed her in the coop. Sorry the pictures are rubbish, but I didn't want to stress them too much. In the nest box: Other 3 huddled together! Looking forward to spending more time with them tomorrow. My foster Silkies are arriving tomorrow, a friend of my cousin is seperating from her boyfriend and she's moved out and is going to her Mum who has no garden but she is hoping that she'll find a place soon, she can visit them and she's bringing all the food with her and their coop, so hopeully not too much upheavel for them either. I collected 4 new ex batts yesterday. They've already been scratching around and eating a few worms we threw in for them. It never ceases to amaze me how strong their instincts are and how quickly they start learning how to be proper chickens. We had two eggs today - laid on the run floor, but I seem to remember the old girls worked out that the nest box was a nice place to lay eggs quite quickly, so hopefully these girls will too. memphisto Posted November 28, 2011 Author Share Posted November 28, 2011 They took themselves to bed tonight and 3 got in the best boxes (I don't want to stop them!) and the other cuddled up next to them on the floor. Had another egg from one girl but it was shell-less but very proud nonetheless And the foster Silkies came and have been fed, watered and put to bed! memphisto Posted November 29, 2011 Author Share Posted November 29, 2011 I am please to report all 4 can get themselves up and out of the coop and take themselves to bed at dusk, 3 out of 4 are perching now, the other prefers sleeping in the nest box. The on with the poorly toe is getting better, we had our first chicken dance from one of them today, so endearing to watch and when I threw in some corn, they looked so cautiously at it, then went mad pecking at it! One was squaring up to Willow through the run wires, so it looks like some of their confidence is developing. 1 lovely egg today, huge egg, must have hurt a bit! They have been FR with my others every other day, last night one went to sleep behind out shed, so we had a mad chicken panic looking for her but she seemed snug as a bug and very annoyed to be moved! Getting lots of eggs, 3-4 daily, we did have 5 one day though? They seem really happy, they tap on the patio doors to get attention as well now!
