We're Moving to a Farm & I will be AWOL for a bit!

Recommended Posts

Very excited, the farmhouse we applied to let has agreed our application and our request for our chooks too.

Even better, there is a disused barn next to the cottage and the farmer says the hens can have that to roam in if it is to wet for them to FR AND he would like to put a sign up for free range eggs being sold from the farm, as he want to branch out into farm produce too.

Very happy, they are putting a special area aside for the hens too (I think we appealed to the wife who has 63 chickens at their house!), which they will grass and enclose.

Obviously this move may mean morehens disease may strike again.

On Lottie's front, not much to report, she seemed perkier this morning and went to the vet who said give the Baytril til Thursday, he is adament she is not suffering but she can't stand or walk but he said he wouldn't put an animal to sleep if he though that they might recover, so OH has to take her back on Weds.

Also, I will be a little AWOL, having my shoulder operated on in the morning, have kissed each of the girls 'Ta Ta' as they went in tonight, told them FR was out for a few days whilst I was away, I don't think they were best pleased!

Thank you all for the well wishes, will update when able in the top forum.

The let is long term the farmer has renovated the cottage for his retirement, he's 52 and intends to retire at 60, so basically, he see us as looking after it and being part of the farm, 2 other families live on the farm, one with children similar age to mine and the other is the farmers nephew, who is a labourer, we met him yesterday and he seems really nice.

He's an organic farmer and is looking at different business avenues as the price of milk for farmers is so poor, he is considering opening a little farm shop where his wife and him would sell produce from the farm, the eggs from my girls forming part of that and the eggs his wife's hens lay as well. He doesn't do any slaughtering onsite, any animals he needs slaughtering he has taken away, the only exception he says is if a cow is showing signs of CJD and then he will take a bolt gun to its head  but he says he's only done that twice in 10 years.

It sounds a bit like the good life, in a way, it will be in others, I'm a bit fearful, we're a 15 minute drive from anywhere, it's a farming community we are moving into and although we intend to embrace it, I am scared of feeling like an outsider. I can't just walk to the shops anymore either BUT I do think it is the life I want to lead in all honesty.

They have offered OH summer work as well as well as asking me if I want to get involved with their farm produce business.

I am excited by it all, especially as it has a wood burner, had it also had an Aga, I would really be in heaven!
