Dental implants

Recommended Posts

Hi

Had abscess last year/root canal then removal and now other neighbouring tooth is hurting(my dentist said it wasnt this tooth but the one that was removed)!?! So I am looking to find a good dentist and also am wondering if I should go for implants when I get the whole area sorted out! I am sure I am about to have another abscess. I think I am about to lose confidence big time in my dentist.

Are implants good and is it painful to have them done? I am reluctant due to pain and also the cost.It was a back tooth last time but if this one starts its a front one.

Thanks sorry for the waffle.

Mine has only lasted 15 years and now its causing trouble. I have been waiting for 9 months for reconstructive surgery at the dental hospital. The same tooth on the other side is starting to go the same way and I can no longer afford to have an implant. I am very upset about this. My advice - if you can afford it go for it.

I had an implant after a tooth was removed (a couple of years ago)

I had virtually no pain at all - certainly nothing to complain about.

I have recently broken a corner off the tooth part (like I have broken a corner off a crown - I must grind my teeth apparently) - but its functionally still OK and way back in the mouth so not visible.

I have had no trouble from the titanium implant.

My OH has several implant at the front - there was quite a lot of swelling, but very little, if any, pain.

They are expensive, but if you can afford it, I would go for it

When you say expensive ... can you give me an idea of how much?

My son has a tooth which is dead at the root (from a traffic accident several years ago). Our current dentist said nothing will be done until he is 21yo because that is when his jaw will have stopped growing. He quoted a price and I was a bit shocked, but have nothing to compare it to.

TIA

I seem to remember it was around £1000. That was some time ago (in the days I had money). I would say that you should seriously consider saving up. Your son is so young and its a front tooth. Alternatives are few, usually its a bridging crown but can they do this to the front teeth? The nhs used to do cosmetic dentistry on the front 4 teeth maybe they still do. Or, and this is a long shot, I got my local health authority to pay for some private treatment, maybe you could argue emosional damage and qualitiy of life or something.

One of my front upper teeth is an implant. My own tooth wore very thin after a condition I had caused me to be sick alot and eventually it broke in a half.

I had a dental implant and apart from the embarrassment of having a missing front tooth / titanium peg showing for a couple of weeks I didnt have any pain or discomfort. I think I've had it about 15 years and havent had any trouble at all.

I have a feeling my other front tooth will eventually go the same way as it is also getting quite thin. If it does break I will definitely have another dental implant. Funds permitting - although I would beg, borrow, (probably not steal  ) rather than have a front tooth missing!

I had a titanium implant in 2005 following jaw surgery and orthodontics. As I had a missing tooth it needed a replacment to stop the other teeth moving. It was around £2,000 and the procedure was fine, particularly considering I had limited jaw opening after the jaw surgery. It seems to be holding up fine - I suspect the past few years have seen changes in implants.

I had one of my front teeth knocked out through a roller-skating accident when roller-disco was all the rage (showing my age now  ) The peg finally gave up a couple of years ago and due to the damage against my jaw the dentist has said I can't have another screw fix! :( I also had to have 2 back teeth removed...my teeth suffered with my pregnancies!! )

The dentist had a denture made as I can't afford a proper fix. I think he quoted about £2,000!!!:shock::shock:

As I have said to hubby unless we are going somewhere which would involve photo's being taken I don't mind the gap. Yes I would love to get it fixed but I'd rather spend our money on the boys! If money was no object I'd get it done

I had one done about four years ago, I'd had repeated abscesses over 20 years ago, root canal, apicectomy, crown with a peg ... eventually the tooth cracked and there was nothing else that could be done, and it was a front tooth so going to be very obvious. My dentist offered a bridge on the NHS, but I felt I'd rather have the security of an implant. It was more than £2,000 - no holiday that year, but it was worth it to me.

I had an NHS denture to wear after the tooth was extracted and while the procedure was going on, I'd have needed that anyway while waiting for a bridge to be made. That was probably the worst bit, as it wasn't a great fit and I hated having it in my mouth. The implant was done over about six months - don't go for the 'instant' ones you see on TV, the failure rate is much higher. I had to wait a couple of months after the tooth was extracted, then have the surgery to fit the titanium implant, then a few more weeks and have a cap fitted on it, and then get the tooth made and fitted. I think it was October-February in all. I could wear the denture throughout this time, so "Ooops, word censored!"ody knew I had a tooth missing. Although at the beginning I couldn't bear to look in the mirror, by the end I was quite blase about it, and even once went out without the denture by accident!

The actual procedure was not painful, and I think I had less swelling/pain than with root canal work. The new tooth is fabulous - it matches my opposite incisor which is slightly crooked, and it looks really natural. It was well worth it for me, and I'd do it again if I could afford it (hoping not to need another one!). Your cleaning and hygiene procedure is really really important, and if you smoke then there is a much lower rate of success, and some dental surgeons will not do it at all on a smoker. If you can manage the cost, I would go for it - you can have more than one tooth attached to a single implant, so if you lose teeth in future you wouldn't have to go through the whole thing again.

Thank you, Cranberry. Yes, it is at the front, his incisor and yes, he is worth the expense :)

Actually, thank you to all who quoted prices and experiences. I'm going to show this thread to my son as I think he will find the experiences worthy of consideration.

oh thanks for the many replies

I was quoted £2500 at Addenbrookes as I cant get it done on the NHS I might need the bone built up its back tooth so thats why I never went for it. When I smile you cannot see it but the pain I have now is the ones near the front the premolar. I just couldnt face the pain after the abscess & the year of root canal plus despite it being NHS it still must have cost me £400 as every time they would try to charge me for starting a course of treatment. Originally my dentist refused to see me as an emergency as I had an xray a couple of days before and was told I didnt have an abscess. Then I ended up at weekend at the out of hours GP services at midnight getting antibiotics and a return visit to get stronger pain relief and when I went back the dentist told me yes you certainly have an abscess with my moon face! .As everyone knows quite rightly GPs dont do teeth!

Just like you Olly I had the apicectomy about 15 years ago & up until it started again lasted this long.

I also got a form from the PCT suddenly turn up (after this went on for about 1.5years) asking me if I had been happy about my treatment and charges, so me is thinking they have had complaints. I didnt fill it in as I had enough(should have). I have dithered about going privately as I sometimes cant see the cost difference. But I dont think the £2.5K will be the end of it and one of my OH friends has spent about £20k getting his mouth fixed. If it was the fronts I can understand that.

Sorry long reply but its good to hear of the longevity of the implants as I wrongly thought they didnt last too long! :o

I had 3 fron lower teeth replaced with inplants and a bridge, hockey accident many years ago made them all wobbly and eventually nothing was holding them in. I had the work finished this December. I is a little daunting at first but my dentist was very goo once the initial proceedure is over you dont need very much local if at all to have the crown fitted to the inplants. i took out a new credit card that is interest free for 2 years to pay for it, cost me £2,800
