sparkysmum
Hi folks, Despite having 2 perfectly good eglus in the WIR all my hens still pile into one eglu, except when they are roosting outside. It's quite ridiculous,as the difference in size is vast, but hilarious too So after much thought I have decided to get them a cube but was wondering if the little ones ( pekin & sablepoot) will manage the ladder. Have to say I'm looking forward to the change if only to free up some space in the run. Love to hear your thoughts, Alli x
karlotta
I did exactly the same as you a couple of months ago and my bants love their cube! I did put my wooden ramp over the plastic one as I'm not sure my pekins would have fancied that, but they scuttle up the wooden one quite happily! I have pekins, Poland, a sablepoot and more in mine and they all cope fine!
coco
I have a wooden house that is about three foot of the ground with a wooden ladder going up to it. My pekins have no problem with it.
sparkysmum
Brilliant idea Karlotta, should have thought of that myself Alli x
lindafw
My tiny Poland girl and her boy cope fine as does my aracana bantie...but one of my full size aracana finds it hard she is a bit dopey tho
TAJ
Mine are fine with it - I did attache a wooden ramp to the steps to start with as the steps start higher up, but they soon got use to. Tracy
cavysqueak
I've never had bantams, but I found that the 'oven ready' ex-battery chicken we adopted had great trouble using the ladder as she couldn't put her foot up high enough to 'step' onto the bottom rung and she has only the solid middle parts on her wing feathers, so she couldn't give herself a 'boost' by flapping. So I put some piled up paving slabs underneath the ladder like steps so she could climb up them to reach the ladder. It worked well. I used two slabs x one slab lengthways underneath the ladder, I piled it like that two slabs high & then put one slab over the middle of the two bottom slabs & made that two slabs high as well. The only thing I did was make sure that only a small amount of slab was actually sticking out from underneath the ladder, as the girls do tend to fly out of the coop in the morning & I was worried about one of the girls landing on the corner of the slabs. My husband wasn't so enamoured with the new arrangement though ... he'd had his eye on the spare slabs to use them elsewhere in the garden! Whoops! Luvachicken
All four of my lovely bantams struggled with the cube ladder so OH built them a wooden ramp/ladder that fits over the top. They all manage it fine although one never seems to have got the knack of it and just jumps.
goodinparts
All of mine, - teeny Bantams d'anvers & pekins included, managed the ladder quite beautifully from day 1. I did put a tree stump at the bottom in case they needed a "mounting block" but they went straight for the ladder.
mollyripkim
Mine struggled at first so we used a wooden trellis as well but now they just have the ladder and they manage just fine.
chuckmum6
Yes, they will be fine my tiniest Pekin has no problems at all! I haven't put in a booster step either, they just a flap and jump and they are up!
