Leicester_H
As this forum usually comes up trumps, I'd like any views on buying a new vacuum cleaner as my old one is falling apart. No real criteria except don't want anything too heavy (due to dodgy back). Any recommendations (or ones to avoid) ? Any recommended suppliers ? As always, thanks in advance, H
Cinnamon
I swear by my Sebo - it is light, quiet & hugely powerful It is the only one that John Lewis would recommend at the time I bought it too. Do you want an upright or a cylinder? I find cylinders much easier to manoeuvre myself.

rachel19
I'd always buy a Henry, we have one at home and at work and he's brilliant - not too noisy either. Plus they're usually relatively inexpensive, i think ours was about £90.
Egluntyne
I love my Miele. Cost a bit but worth every penny.
abwsco
Miele, mines old but still going strong. Have been some good prices around as well at Argos, Comet etc
superkitty
Another vote here for a Henry (well actually, ours is a Hetty so it is pink and has eyelashes ) but it is a TROOPER. 3 years of solid use now and still going strong. We are the House of Cat Hair, BTW - it does really well on that too
CatieB
I love my dyson and their customer service is fab. The only issue may be weight, you'd need to try one. I have the cylinder which is significantly lighter than the upright models. I have the motorhead one, which is like having the power of an upright in a cylinder. Some people dont like the fact you have to empty them but I like to be able to see when its full and not have to buy bags. It always amazes me how much it picks up! I have used a Henry at work and IMHO its nowhere near as powerful, but they are much cheaper. Re supplier I decided the model I wanted then sourced it online at the cheapest price. I've had it well over 5 years and its outside its warranty but when I got a blockage last year Dyson replaced the whole hose free of charge as they didnt want me poking in something that has electricity to it (as its powered head). WOW
lindafw
dyson upright...I had one and loved it...but when it died I replaced with a cylinder...it works great but I wish I had got an upright
sadietoo
We have a seven year old Dyson upright that is fab. We've had it from new and it has had a new extension hose on it. I love the fact that hte spares are available online. It seems to need emptying quite often and so I am convinced a similar bagged cleaner would have cost me a fortune in bags. OUr previous cleaner was a Miele, and whilst good, with a brand new bag, it really didn't perform any where near as well as the Dyson. It was however, lighter. The dyson is very heavy, When my dyson finally dies, I will replace it either with the ball type upright or a cylinder Dyson..(although personally I have issues with cylinders getting stuck on bits of furniture and tripping me up! Mum
Another Dyson Darling here! Best VC I've ever had. Bit on the heavy side, but I get around that ... I've given the task of vacuuming to one of my sons
AJuff
Definitely a Dyson! I have an upright downstairs which is 15 years old and still going strong! I also have a cylinder animal upstairs which is excellent too!
cloud
Ditto to the Dyson. They're quite light and behave well to being tugged around the house. And I like the way the seem to be designed to go up stairs - drag them up and the sit on the step. The motor failed our Dyson last year and I was able to get a spare direct from them and fit it - there are videos on YouTube showing you how. Lavenders_Blue
I currently have a Vax cylinder vacuum cleaner but can't remember off hand which model it is. I'm very happy with it and it seems to cope well with the dog hair. Bagless, washable filters, fairly lightweight and reasonably quiet too. I previously had a Sebo cylinder vacuum cleaner and I did really like it (was very sucky!)... except in the 4 years I had it, it broke several times and even though it was still in warranty, I couldn't get the parts replaced FOC as the parts that kept breaking weren't covered by warranty (I can't imagine why - sorry, cynical ). So it ended up costing me a small fortune. We have a very good vacuum repair shop near us, and the owner reckons Dysons keep him in business! He recommends Sebo for uprights and Miele for cylinder. Forestchook
Another vote here for a Henry (well actually, ours is a Hetty so it is pink and has eyelashes ) but it is a TROOPER. 3 years of solid use now and still going strong. It was recently realised that the Henry here is 23 years old. He's still going strong. Admittedly he does not get the hardest use these days but has dealt with a lot over the years. I've also heard good things about miele. I would always go with a cylinder, particularly if you have a bad back. Why push the whole vacuue back and forth when you could just be pushing the hose? donald
I love my Miele. Cost a bit but worth every penny. Had 3 or was it 4 dysons but Miele too.....best one we have owned and I have my sisters old one in the garage for mud of tractor and it still is going strong if battered(that must be 12 years old)?? Sister got a sebo and thought it was rubbish in comparison to Miele.

Ms Marple
I have a Dyson Animal which is actually pretty good. However I bought Miele yesterday - my house has several floors and I get fed up of lugging the Dyson up and down three floors so thought it was time to treat myself to a second. It was on the basis of this thread and Egluntyne!! It is brilliant!! Not cheap- but I feel over the years I have learned that you get what you pay for. My washing machine is Miele and has been going about 10 years (tempts fate)

Mines only ever needed new bags though.
abwsco
Well, I've succumbed to a new red Miele as it was under £100 so too good to miss. DD was trying to save up for a new vac so she is going to have my old battered one-lol

Jules.
We just got a Miele cat & dog from John Lewis for £149, & also bought the 10 year warranty for £30. The suction on it is so strong it lifts up our eldest son's bedroom carpet
