Hi all

 

I'd like to let my hens out, but there are too many off-the-lead dogs around (live on a car free lane) & too many gaps in our fence to ensure their safety. Is omlet netting dog resistant? I plan to be in the garden when they are out, but need something to give me enough time to scare any intruders away!

I wouldn't say so. Unless you electrify it.

My dog makes no attempt to get over/through it but then he's not interested in the chickens . I'm not sure if an unknown, desperate dog would be kept out though . They could probably dig under it if they really wanted to.

I'd say no too - my dog isn't interested in my chickens but he has been known to burrow underneath (its not pegged down) and a prey driven dog would probably find a way in easily. Just charging it would probably knock it down.

I asked the same thing a few weeks back and someone, can't remember who without checking, said their dog had chewed through their netting.

Yup...it was me! Our old dog happily chewed through it in several places

Netting is only really to contain your hens, only electrified will keep a dog at bay.

I'd be worried that any strange dog would run up and down the netting, barking at them - that's enough to frighten any hen.

I've had a cat or fox chew through one of mine to mine to keep my lot off the spuds they now can walk or run through it with out stopping

Dylan jumps over mine, flushes to girls into a corner then proceeds to eat their food so id say not.

 

(There's always one daft dog and it's normally one of mine. )

can you imagine mine out with the chickens? I make sure the laydees are in the run before I let the hounds out; their prey drive is too strong.

My daft spaniel poked her head through the bottom bit a few weeks ago and got really stuck- she as after the mealworms believe it or not. I noticed the hens crowding round this particular spot, with a pathetic looking dog trying desperately to back out before they attacked! It took 5 mins of pulling first one ear out and then the other before she was free! So yes, mine is dog proof.....

Thanks for all the replies. It seems perhaps the general consensus is not dog resistant then.

 

Does anyone have any other dog resistant ideas for a moveable pen?

depends on the size and shape of your dog's head really. I have rabbit netting along the borders, keeps all but one hen off - she's able to walk through the small holes
