Valkyrie
Lots of Tigerella toms. The passata machine came yesterday from Seeds of Italy and OH couldn't wait to try it out. Followed WitchHazels instructions and had 2 trays baking in the oven - it all made 1 litre which has been put into 2 recycled plastic containers from the Chinese takeaway! Lovely flavour and is now in the freezer. That machine is fantastic, all done in minutes OH very impressed with my new toy, so thank you WH, no more hours of sieving - 5 minutes of handle turning makes it so much easier. OH wants to grow more toms next year (have no idea where they will go). We also picked loads of red peppers and then popped them in the freezer - made almost 2lb, best yield for ages. Kate - haven't eaten the aubergine yet. But it is earmarked for tomorrow lunch and I wanted to give the poor plant some relief before the branch broke - there are loads more on there, so giving the other fruits a chance to ripen too. Our remaining onions "Stuttgarter Giant" were in a different bed to the others and look OK and are drying off in the greenhouse now (actually they are probably cooking with this sudden heat). Bought lots of garlic to plant from the farmers market the other day - from the Isle of Wight - saved me from ordering on the internet! Guest
I picked some beetroot my ENTIRE Charlotte crop (was less than 2 kilos so a bit disappointing). And some runners and toms for tea. Runners are still going strong and toms are just about to go from comfortable to glut. I'm terrible for planting things too late - I have some cucumbers just beginning to grow that I suspect are too late to survive. Leeks are also young and the brocolli are chewed to bits - thats the ones that survived the chewing. Still I'll know better next year - even if I dont' do better! Is now a good time to plant some garlic? Anything else I should/could plant?
Lesley
6 courgettes and some cherry tomatoes. Still haven't found a crab apple tree Asked the postie to look out for me! Christian
Ooooh, now then, when can I pop over? Holiday next week, but will try and sort something out. When is the season for crabbies?
Mrs Frugal
Depends on the apple variety, Christian. Ours are ready and falling now but others will still be on the trees for a couple of months yet. We've dug up the rest of our second earlies (Accent) and they are fabulous. We still have 2 rows of maincrop potatoes in the ground. I picked runner beans, another courgette and some rainbow chard and as we bumped into LSH's Dad while we were at the lottie, he let me go and pick another punnet of raspberries, a basket of apples, some tomatoes, a cucumber and a green pepper. Valkyrie
Nice photo Penguinmad - those beetroots look really good. Autumn onion sets should be around soon for you - I am waiting for mine to arrive - assuming that they didn't forget my order. I have been growing winter manures on the bare patches to dig in later next year. I will plant the garlic in pots in October because they like cold to get them going. Christian - sorry to say this but one of my mums neighbours has been knocking off the crab apples from his tree because they were falling on his car - then binned them!! What a waste! In fact they look like they have gone bad I think I will cook with them as I can't see the children even considering putting them in their mouths as they are
chickencam
We have got some oval shaped ones that are a really odd colour, we bought the plants at a famers market so i can't remember what they are. Mrs Webmuppet
I picked 312g blackberries from my thornless bush in the garden. The chickens are hoovering up the windfall apples. The two apple trees are ladden with apples, they are a later variety so it'll be a couple of weeks before they are ready. The pear tree hasn't produced anything. The plum trees did ok. No I don't have a huge garden with an orchard they are all small trees.
