Student Benefits esp London Help Please

Recommended Posts

ES, (conditional on A Levels  ) will be going to Uni in September. It will be 5 years @ £9,000 for tuition alone so we are looking at taking advantage of as many student benefits as possible. We are newbies to all of this so any tips and pointers for savings would be very much welcomed. He will be based in London (£££) so he will be leaving his car behind and using public transport.

Yes,get an Oyster card & also a 16-25 rail card if he is travelling home by train a lot.

My eldest has a free prescriptions card too, which they can apply for as students...also gives free eye tests.

The usual student cards give pretty good discounts in some shops too.

Is he keeping a job on while he is at Uni?

Is he keeping a job on while he is at Uni?

He is leaving his J Lewis part time job and hope to pick something up with them if he feels he has time with his workload.

FIVE years ? May I ask what he's studying please ?

Medicine :) He'll have quite a hefty debt at the end of it :( . DD wants to do Veterinary - another long expensive road ahead .

Ah - thats what I thought - have you seen this

http://www.bma.org.uk/careers/medical_education/student_finance/updateonstudentfinancefor2012.jsp

"All medical students starting their course in 2012 will continue to have their tuition fees paid through the NHS Bursary from their fifth year onwards."

Ah, thanks Hazel. ES did mention that the NHS picked up the 5th Year but I hadn't seen the official stance on this. It is good to have those links for reference. It looks like it hasn't been confirmed for future years but it would appear that he should be able to benefit :D

I agree with the 16-25 Railcard, I got mine free with my Student Account (with NatWest) and used it every week last year so saved me quite a bit! :D

The only place I really use my NUS extra card (which you have to pay for) is at the cinema for Student tickets! ... I can use my "Aber card" for discount in some places which has NUS logo on it and is free.

I don't have a "proper" job up here but worked full time last summer and every weekend last semester so earned a bit of money... but was a 10 hour round trip to work so didn't pay v well, more for the experience!

Also done Lambing nights for both years, 10 weeks of no sleep but again its great work experience and a bit of money.

First year I'd say a job is great but second onwards the modules count towards final degree grade (not sure if its the same for Medicine) so I'd do less hours those years.

We tend to go out in the week rather than weekends so don't miss much by working weekends so if he could work at JL at weekends may be ideal!

An oyster card is a must for getting around London, it is really expensive otherwise. Depending on your income, he might be able to get a grant/bursary. Also, since its in London, the amount he can get on his student loan will also be higher.
