Martin B
At the Royal Show today, there was a Waitrose stand. All about how Waitrose supports British Farming. I was quite interested in the egg section. I have some news for all of those who don't sell your eggs! YOU SHOULD DO! Those of you who sell your eggs cheaply.. YOU SHOULDN'T Clare, did you know that Waitrose charge £1.49 for 4 Bantam eggs? Lesley seems to have got it spot on with her pricing for free range eggs. £1 for 6 is the same as Waitrose Burford Browns. Duck eggs are retailing at £1.80 for 6. Goose eggs are retailing at £3.49 for 1 egg!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RIP OFF! Pheasant eggs are £1.49 for 4 also. Quail eggs are £1.99 same as mine for a dozen! Just thought I'd let you know. Lesley
I sell hen eggs for £1.20 Martin - you usually get mates rates - perhaps I should charge you more next time? My boxes are mixed colour eggs, including blue and white - worth more than Burford Browns! I seel duck eggs for 25p each - slightly less than Waitrose then. Interesting to see all the prices. Tina C
Am confused - why is Martin buying eggs off Lesley - and is he selling them on for a profit????
chocchick
maybe I should get the chickens to set up their own stand and work for a living selling eggs
craftyhunnypie
I have a lady who buys 4 eggs from me for £1. She's happy paying that and I'm happy with that price. She only ever has 4 as she lives on her own and says that if she has any more & dies in her sleep, the beautiful eggs will be there just left to go rotten!!!! She's a character at 93!!!! I don't like charging her, but she always says - if she can't pay for them, then she's not having them!!!! When my cube comes and I have more chooks, then the price might increase as I will have more mouths to feed, need more straw & have to change the easy bed more often! My chicken sitter will also get a pay rise! Had to laugh at my dad the other night, he had 4 fried eggs on toast....yes 4! He was hoping for 2 double yolkers, but ended up cracking open 4 instead. Mrs Frugal
Martin, I'm depressed now. It would take me a week to fill a half dozen size egg box with my reluctant layers .

Popcorn
I'm in the same boat as Kate. At the moment we are averaging about 5 a week. Terriblle!!! Thelma stopped altogether since our next door neighbour installed his fox watch. We have been managing on the eggs the hens give us, but now I know about Waitrose I might go there for them - if I don't see Lesley first
Helly Welly
We charge 20 per egg and always manage to sell our surplus. Good job too as they are laying like mad, 159 eggs in June, an average of 5.3 eggs per day from 6 chickens!

Popcorn
pesky crows Our next door neighbour was complaining a few weeks ago that the magpies kept eating his berries. He hasn't got them covered over with netting, so is asking for trouble really. A few days ago I was in the bedroom and I heard an odd noise from the back garden. I looked out the window and said neighbour was taking aim at this magpie with a pellet gun. I opened the window and shouted, "everything ok down there?".....he was startled to see me, and hid the gun behind his back. I noticed the bird had got a broken wing at this point. The magpie is still around and I haven't heard anymore shots, thankfully, he won't last long with a broken wing now and can only hop about on the ground. I was really unsure what to do about it, and I haven't said anymore or mentioned anything tro him about it since. I've really gone off topic now haven't I
chocchick
I managed to get rid of my 26 egg backlog, but should get hold of the 6 egg (6 or was it 4?) waffle recipe from my friend...could be useful for some people here. I make cakes which use 3 eggs I'm putting on weight

harveypup
I don't charge for our eggs but if somebody offers to pay I say "No, if you enjoy them (how could you not) just promise me that you will never buy battery eggs again"
Aunty e
I spent the day with the acting Chief Egg Marketing Inspector last week and was casually asking him if I had to have my eggs stamped/needed a permit. He said that you're fine, as long as you have under fifty laying hens. I am still under that, just, so I'm off to Columbia Road Flower Market on Sunday with my egg mountain. I'm going to be cheeky and ask for £2 for six, mostly because M and S are selling organic free range eggs for £2.10 and mine come from chickens with names, and in all different colours AND they're organic-ish. wish me luck! kannie
Oooh - pity I can't come this weekend Aunty e - I'd have bought some from you! Lottie's started laying, but they're very small! We've saved up the first 7 which I think we'll have for breakfast tomorrow, but I hate having no eggs in at all!

I like that one - I don't charge, but that is a great way to make the point. I think after they've tasted fresh eggs, they will never enjoy shop-bought eggs again!
