Helly Welly

Books for an eight year old with a reading age of 16!

Recommended Posts

Helly, Rosie is exectly the same, and always seems to have at least two books on the go at the same time! It's a shame, because Rosie dug out some of her books and passed them onto a friend a few weeks ago, but if you're down this way, then let me know and Abi can come and borrow from Rosie's library - she has most of those mentioned above and more

oh my goodness I am feeling so nostalgic ... all these names are coming back to me! How could I have forgotten Noel Streatfield (a great writer, in my view) - Malcolm Saville, William Mayne, Geoffrey Treece, Pamela Brown ... and the Little House on the Prairie series which are brilliant and much, much better than the hideous tv series.

Egluntine, I too read 'A Country Child' by Alison Uttley and it is one of my favourite books! I am going to have to get onto Green Metropolis and see how many of my childhood memories I can resurrect!

We had The Silver Sword, too ... I can still picture the bookcase with all these books in, sadly now dispersed since my parents died, I was so lucky to grow up in a house full of books, though! :)

ooh, and I meant to add K M Peyton, the 'Flambards' series - possibly a bit old for 8, but I don't reckon I was a lot older than that when I read these! And L M Boston, The House at Green Knowe and others in that series.

Alan Garner, The Owl Service .. Carrie's War, Nina Bawden ... yes, why are children's books so much better than adult's?

what about the Alex Rider series? Stormbreaker etc - the book is MUCH better than the film

They are FAB!! I've borrowed all of my son's Alex Rider books to read and they are terrific.

The Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder were some of my favourite books as a child, Olly :D .

HIya - try asking at your local library - the children's librarian may be able to recommend some things, or send new stuff her way. They also probably have magazines eg Carousel for children who are into books. Check out http://www.cool-reads.co.uk/ a good site with book reviews by young people which you/she may enjoy. Pullman is great - no hesitation in recommending those to an 8 year old. Has she tried Eoin Colfer eg the Artemis Fowl series?

I just have to say a huge Thank you to all of you for your excellent suggestions, this thread really sent some of you on a nostalgia trip, didn't it?

I already have all of the Davis Eddings books, i probably re-read these more than any other.

I also loved Arthur Ransome as a child, i haven't read them for years. Luckily, Abi has the same tastes as me in books (Enid Blyton is enjoyed by both of us) so whatever i get for her means a new book for me to read too!

We have so many books in our house that we are having to swap bedrooms so we can build more bookshelves. OH doesn't read at all, he is constantly astounded by the number of books me and Abi get through.

I've copied and pasted all your suggestions into Word, which i'll print off and take with me to the library over the hols. They are doing a Big Wild Read challenge for the summer so we'll be in there every week, excellent.

Thanks again everybody, i knew i could rely on you!!!

Thanks Fred, I'll tell him. I think that one of them (at least) is on his website. The site is still under construction, so theer may be more since I last looked. I met Anthony Horowitz at one of the Walker Books summer bashes - he's lovely, but very ordinary looking and not at all starry (which is nice).

I managed to find some Anne Fine in Oxfam yesterday and i'm taking Terry Pratchett on holiday for her to read.

The list of all your ideas is now permanently in my bag as we are always going in charity shops looking for books. I'm really hoping to find Swallows and Amazons, she may have to wait for me to read it first! I may even spalsh out and buy it new.
