Lorri-d
Hi guys, The chicks are now nearly 5months. We are not quite sure what breed this one is though. We were told it was a frizzle but it looks like a poland to me. Are we right in thinking it's a boy? The orp in the front we initially thought was a boy as it was soooo much bigger than the other orp we had but now we think its a girl. It's probably very obvious so sorry if I'm asking stupid questions but they haven't crowed yet so am doubting what I thought. Sorry the pics are blurry but I couldnt get any clearer and photobucket said I have rotated the pics but it clearly hadnt and after an hr of trying i've given up! The Dogmother
Not easy to tell from those photos, but the one in front is definitely a female, the other one looks to be a pullet too but as I said, it's hard to tell.
Daphne
The good news is I think they are 2 pullets I'm not sure that is a pure poland tho, her crest looks a bit tufty like an araucana rather than fully rounded. Her colour isn't right either, so my best guess is that she is either a poland cross, or a pure poland but from crossed coloured parents, probably a self black crossed with a silver laced. Very pretty though; she's got the correct white earlobes so you should get lovely white eggs
The Dogmother
Sorry, forgot to answer re the breed... yes, the body shape is all wrong for a Poland.
Lorri-d
Thanks so much everyone, fingers crossed she's a girly She actually has very blue ear lobes! Does that mean she will lay blue eggs? That would be pretty fab! I'll try and get a better photo of her in a bit.
The Dogmother
She should do. I once had a Poland x araucana which looked not unlike that bird and she laid bluey-green eggs.

You have just totally made my day! Fingers crossed no one says she is actually a he when I load a better photo!
Chortle Chook
Your lovely girly is certainly not a Frizzle or a Poland. Probably she is a cross. Whatever is in her mix she is very pretty It's probably too exotic but might she have Houdan in her?
Lorri-d
Hopefully a better pic! It's the comb that makes me wonder, its not straight but kind of floppy.
Chortle Chook
I can't really see from the picture, but is her comb like the comb of the chicken on my avatar? She is a Frizzle x Poland. On the other hand, unlike your girly, she really is frizzled. This was what she looked liked when she was not quite POL. Now she has more of a crest that falls forward over her face but still has those scrambled feathers.

I was told she was a frizzle but then the breeder told me all sorts! She's lovely anyway so am just hoping it's really a girl.
Parsley
I agree with two girls but no idea what breed Definately not a Poland though
Redwing
Its certainly a cross breed, my guess is that Araucana, Poland and/or Houdan are involved somewhere. A very pretty bird and looks more female than male
Lorri-d
I don't beleive it, she's gone missing!!! Have been looking for her in the garden for over an hour in the rain and she's nowhere to be seen. She's not in the run and our garden is really dense with trees and bushes so if she's hiding we won't find her in the dark. Am so upset
merlina
she'll be asleep up a tree now! that's what my bluebell did anyway if she could get away with it thankfully she never came to any harm for spending a night in the wild (but she was quite a good flyer) Her preferred spot was about my head height in a laburnum tree (until that became the first place i checked) Hope your girl is ok
Lorri-d
I really hope you're right merlina and she's up in a tree. We have had a really good look but some of our bushes are so deep it's hard to see anything. I shall be up so early to have another look! keeping everything crossed! Lorri-d
Right, well we found her perched in a tree up quite high! So wings being clipped this morning. But... now my silkie is really poorly she is laying almost motionless with her eyes shut and barely moves when you pick her up. I have removed her from the others and bought her inside but is there anything else I can do? She wont open her beak to drink or eat and I cant get her to open her eyes so it's not looking good She was fine yesterday, maybe a little subdued but they have only been in with the 'big girls' since the weekend so I just presumed she was a bit out of sorts having been moved to her new home. She wasnt being picked on and the younger ones were accepted quite easily. I've looked her over for injuries but cant see anything. Is there anything I can do? P.S am going to add a new post about her in case this one gets missed, hope that's ok.
daxigirl
X breeds that have a silkie parent come out with the pretty non silkied feathers but inherit the head tuft and black skin, sometimes the extra toe. Read a little bit in a chicken encyclopedia about it. My Lisa-Marie has the same skin, feathering, similar tiara comb (my description ) and feather boufant. Just wish she was a bit friendlier. Sorry to read about your silkie, hope she feels better as the morning goes on.
Lorri-d
Silkie is a little better thank you. Here are some more photos showing her head. Def a girl do you think?

daxigirl
Yes I would guess girlie.
Chortle Chook
She's lovely!! The crest and comb make me think - part silver laced Poland, the turquoise earlobes make me think - part Silkie. When she is ready to lay eggs you should start to take bets . . . will they be as in Araucana or as in Silkie or as in Poland ... or no egg at all as in . . . cockerel
Lorri-d
I think she may have laid today!! Have just come back from work to find a very small it's too small for the 2 hens that are already laying so one of the new ones must have laid it! I wonder which one it was? I'm thinking it may be hers as she is the smallest chicken... shall have to spy to see who's laying what
