Black lump - now with pics

Recommended Posts

Just spotted a strange growth near one of our pekins ear lobes. We've been away for a fortnight and never spotted it before we went.

At first we thought it was a louse, but i think it looks more like a black blood blister. Incidentally her comb and wattles are virtually non existent, she is approx 20 wks.

Would welcome any thoughts ?

Thanks

I vote tick :D They're easy to get out if you have an O'Tom tick hook (I use them for my cats on recommendation of the vets, didn't know chickens could get them but that looks exactly the same as one that I got summoned to remove from my friends dog this weekend :vom: ). You just have to not :vom::vom::vom: ...that's what I struggle with.

Good luck, hope the vets visit goes well!

Thanks all! Typical - when we got there tonight it had dropped off. But we learnt all about them, and got the little screw type hooks so am prepared for next time! No idea where she could have picked it up from.

It was really interesting as we were shown how to file their claws (with a dremmel drill) and how to check their pelvis' so we know when they're coming into lay. Was great as we had our first egg today so we were shown the difference between little Bren and the others who aren't ready yet.

It looks like what we used to call a sheep tick. Thinking about it, used to see them a lot more often than we do now - my cats used to be forever picking them up (lived in a city at the time, so no sheep there!)

My grandad (who would be over 120 if he was still with us) kept sheep and used to say the best way to get rid of them was touch them with a lit cigarette (he was a non-smoker). So that's what I did when the cats had them and it worked. (made the nasty critters withdraw their mouth parts apparently - but the cats were always fine afterwards, altho not keen on the whole cigarette/singed fur thing!)
