Fashionable clothes for teen boy

Recommended Posts

Hi any advice on fashionable clothing brands for a young teen boy? I have only ever bought him Boden and occasionally Next and M&S, so not quite sure what cuts it in the wider teen boy world. As of yet he hasn't shown any real interest in his clothes, apart from telling me some things he won't wear, as they are too babyish, he still hates anything to do with shopping, but that will change fairly soon I guess.

I hate clothes shopping with a passion too!

Being a Student going back to Uni tomorrow in need of clothes I went to Primark and H&M earlier for a couple of hoodies + tshirts

...and a Penguin onesie for our Freshers social on Wednesday

Also have a look in TopMan, River Island and Burton... let him choose, the thing I hate is when people are "Do you like this? and this? and this?" or have a look on the Asos website if he doesn't want to shop.

Superdry + American Apparel for hoodies. Ummm, I can't think!

It is a bit of a slippery slope and one that with 2 teenage boys we have avoided buying in to too much. I look at style rather than brand. Jack Wills, Superdry, Abercrombie & Fitch, Quicksilver, Jack Jones, Voi, are all popular and expensive brands. I would treat him to only a perhaps a t shirt and a hoodie from one of these brands (birthday or Christmas present) and use places like H&M (quite reasonable), Top Man (quite pricey) and Republic (medium re price) for day to day stuff. Primark is perfectly good (and acceptable) and very well prices as is Matalan which is often overlooked. Be careful also re buying expensive brands as in some schools and areas they are not cool whereas they might be in others. My children don't like certain brands like Jack Wills as they are associated with spoilt private school children around here. This is a good discounted website for clothes http://www.mandmdirect.co.uk

My YS has difficulty finding fashionable clothes he likes that fit as he is quite slight in stature. About 90% of his clothes come from Topman, they seem to do a good range of styles and sizes :) They are not the cheapest but he was able to get 10% off with a discount card (Youngscot). YS liked their white shirts for school as they are not too baggy however I found that Primark did an acceptable one for a third of the price

Been through all this !! Mine is Long, and thin, like a snake!!

primark do jeans with 28" waist, and 34" inside leg(I love them for this), Next do decent shirts and T shirts for narrow ones too!!

We are Very careful what labels we buy, as Superdry is considered really a No around here, He has a Fat Face hoodie, and some Saltrock stuff, mainly because the factory outlets' are here!!

The Shoe issue, is another joy.....

I got some t's for my boyfriend from here having searched for ages for T-shirts that wouldn't shrink in the wash & were fairly traded. Might be worth a look http://www."Ooops, word censored!"y.co.uk/ there are some really odd ones but some quite nice ones as well

The boy's favourite is this one http://www."Ooops, word censored!"y.co.uk/shop/p/peas/mens-t-shirts/chocolate

Good luck with the search!

My DS (16) has taken to doing a lot of his own shopping online now that he has his own debit card, buying t-shirts with quirky logos, he is happy with jeans from Tesco, Asda and Primark, they do fashion ranges as well as basics. He also loves New Look shirts, but only buys in the sales. We have avoided fashion labels in this house for the girls and him, he owns one Abercrombie and Fitch hoodie which he bought from a charity shop for £10, and my girls are both savvy shoppers sticking mainly to Primark and charity shops although my eldest does have a weakness for shoes.

DS also has a lovely Blue 'Captain Jack Harkness' style coat that he bought on Portabello Rd in the summer for £25, it has earned him some style point in his new mixed sixth form too so he is a very happy boy.

We have the opposite problem to a few of you who have commented, my DS is tall and chunky with long legs, most shops assume that if you have a waist size of 36 then you must be short and chubby, again Primark wins out here for jeans.

Difficult isn't it.

We also generally avoid labels and fortunately my boys are not influenced by what is cool - but that said I don't want them to stand out as uncool either. They also both hate shopping and would much rather I bought the clothes, bring them home and then take back what they don't like

Primark are great for jeans, Marks do slim fit shirts which are nice shape for slim teenagers. I've bought a few tops in Tesco that my ES really likes and wears a lot and none of his friends have the same  YS is still happy with stuff I picked up in John Lewis at top of boys age range but he's outgrowing it all.

My ES has to wear a dark suit for 6th form and I got him to go for a Ben Sherman suit - no idea whether Ben Sherman is in, out, etc for teens as unfamiliar with name but the style was long slim almost mod look to the suit that really looked good on ES. I'd picked a few dark suits off the rails for him to try and that one looked best.

If you are going for a label because it's in for teenagers I would tend to go for just one item and something like a hoodie that is the top layer, what is in seems to change and they are so expensive - glad I don't have a teen girl

Thanks everyone, there are good ideas here, I don't want him to become obsessed by labels and agree about the idea of the odd hoody etc from a designer brand. He is still mostly indifferent about his clothes, but there are a growing number of pony logos and Jack Wills tops amongst his friends, so until/if he picks up on this I will save my £'s. I always hunt for bargains in sales, so now I have a few names, I may pick up the odd thing if it is cheap.

CM thanks for link - will peruse that in run up to Christmas - I take it you have used and like?

Yes I have used http://www.mandmdirect.co.uka few times and they are very good. Sign up for emails and wait for one of the frequent sales  We are fortunate to live very close to the Swindon Outlet and a House of Frazer Outlet and so can buy a lot of labelled clothes very cheaply 8)

I have girls & they are big fans of H&M.

So am I,as its cheap (ish) ,wears well & is bang on trend wise, especially the Divided range.

I got a leather look biker jacket in that plummy/mulberry colour for a daughter last week,& an emerald green suede biker jacket for the other - they were about £25 each, which is pretty good I think.

One of my girls loves the Divided mens lumberjack shirts & huge padded jackets - I am sure you would find some good stuff for him there.

The website is nice & easy to navigate too :D

My DS (15yo, yr11) has decided that Topman & River Island are currently shops of choice for new purchases, tho H&M was perfectly acceptable until recently & tshirts from there are still happily worn.....he does have a couple of Jack Wills items, tho his hoody was recycled from the Lost Property box at school just prior to Matron moving the contents on to the charity shop, having languished there unnamed for a term  ...

He has a couple of chosen for himself tshirts from Matalan which are still in the system too....

Peer pressure has a lot to answer for imho in any school......and available funds in their own sticky mitts has a sobering effect, they soon learn that allowances/cash in hand does not necessarily stretch to what they aspire to without sacrifices elsewhere, and they either learn to save & wait, or cut their cloth to suit!
